Nevermind, the team manager cancelled it... Someone else is driving.

That video is so gruesome btw.

I think he just meant to frighten him or maybe spray dirt on him with some wheel spin. But he clearly got too close to Ward, opened the throttle too much, and hit him. So he probably didn't want to hit the guy, but Tony's a fucking asshole piece of shit so who knows.

Ward should've never approached him, which is a fair point. It's just completely avoidable, which is why it's such a tragedy. It looks like vehicular manslaughter though, even though it was a race.

Never ever get out of your race car. Ever.

I wonder if he will be charged.

He also owns a team that Ryan Newman, Kurt Busch, and Danica Patrick race for.

I'm weirdly shaken by this.

For fun. He shattered his leg in one of those races last year and missed the second half of the NASCAR season. Probably should have taken that as a sign.

Ward should've never been anywhere near where he was. Unless a DA wants his name in headlines there won't be any charges here - no way can you say it was in any way intentional. Nothing in that video shows he gunned down a dude. IMO he was attempting to avoid Ward but Ward got too close. Poor lightning + bad vision out of the car + a guy in a dark suit = hate to see anything I'd think.

It's a terrible deal.

I think the caution flag was a good enough sign.

Stewart did nothing to avoid him. Also there's no reason he opened the throttle like that. None at all.

Right, the stewards immediately flagged it and everyone slowed down. Buuuuut for some reason Stewart lifted off the throttle, and as he approached Ward, floored it. Hmmmm.

You can't tell when he opened up. That video is shot across the track, you hear the cars passing in front of the camera.

I think it's pretty clear his view was obscured.

Cars don't stop during a caution. There is no expectation that a person will be walking on the track walking through traffic.

He went a whole lap under caution before hitting him.

Duo, do you really think he meant to hit him?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i've read that sprint cars have no transmission (only one gear), so that rules out the idea that the increased engine noise was from down shifting. also, he fishtailed as he hit him, which indicates loss of rear wheel traction, not something that would have happened coming out of a turn unless he opened the throttle or intentionally swerved.

He may have swerved to try to miss him, as the two cars in front of him did.

Wouldn't suddenly swerving on a slick dirt track send you sliding? I think Stewart never saw him until the last moment or only when he hit him and jerked the wheel.

My brother in law used to run these cars, you can't see anything in them and those tracks have horrible lighting.

You have to be kidding me. He floored it.
1. His car ACCELERATES abruptly
2. The sound coincides with this forward sudden acceleration
3. The vehicle accelerates so hard it actually loses traction and goes sideways

He lost control of it he opened the throttle so far. He didn't even have it pinned that hard when he spun Ward out. It's very obvious he pressed the accelerator and did not steer away from Ward or hit his brakes.

Hit him? No. Mess with him? Considering he got out of his car and threw his helmet at another driver's car in the past, yes. I think he meant to spit dirt at him or shut him up with some engine noise, car went too far sideways, tire caught him, now Ward's dead.

... or Ward got in the way, Stewart never saw him until it was too late.

No way to know. Stewart maybe had a GoPro in with him, that's about the only way to know.m

Hopefully this stops idiots from getting out on a racetrack during a f'n race, caution or not.

You can't answer why Stewart hit the throttle so hard it broke his rear end loose. And everyone else saw him. And it's light enough for you to see a man standing in a race track.
