Oh fuck, I was waiting yesterday for the leak but didn't find it, I only found Emily, which I posted in the YSI thread. Now I'm stuck at work behind a firewall.

Yeah, I wanted to wait until the release date before hearing. But then someone posted a link to the leak on megaupload on another board. And I figure I am seeing her in about a month so I'll want to be familiar with the material going in.

i don't know what to think so far. didn't really like the orchestration on the first listen and the length of the songs turned me off. but i guess i'll have to listen to it more often, which is what i was going to do anyway <3

Bill Callahan, you can fuck Joanna Newsom all you want, but please don't ruin a good song with some out of the blue shitty backing vocals on a great song.

i listened to nothing but this album at work
pretty sure its a masterpiece and o'rourkes orchestration is amazing i like how prominently albini is credited like anyone can tell he had anything to do with it if there aren't loud drums |

I like smog and the song isn't ruined, but I think his vocals are out of place.

I am hating the strings. They just smother her.
My favorite part of her music is the lyrics and I can barely hear or understand them. I hope this is a grower because right now I am very disappointed. |

damn, why can't i be gushing over it? it's a very nice album though i dont like that her voice is more restrained this time around. the orchestration is well done but the songs themselves are meandering. the songs are 9-10 minutes each and chug along with nary a thematic change or dynamic shifts, its very easy to get lost in it. and i'm not sure the orchestration is entirely necessary. the biggest draw for me on milk eyed mender was that she could accomplish such rich layers of melody and rhythym with a single instrument, keeping it full sounding yet bare at the same time.

Before it started to leak, I didn't know about the Van Dyke Parks, O'Rourke and Albini's involvement on this album, nor about the scale of it. I thought her next album was going to be more along the lines of 'The Milk Eyed Mender' so this was a rather pleasant and unexpected surprise. Even though it can be dense and demanding, I haven't listened to a 2006 album that is as rewarding as this one. I'm on my 4th listen and I can't get enough of it.
