It's a fascinating read, and it's always good to take wisdom from others' experience. Take the advice and apply where necessary in your own journey

I gotta say, I'm a little surprised at how so many people are sticking up for the content in rap music on a The Smashing Pumpkins forum.

It's a lot of posturing from these rap artists. They're so concerned about looking and appearing "cool". I think the content isn't very good or insightful. Of course that would be a none-story if the music was good, but with rap, the vocals are always the main focus... Another reason I don't like the type of music.
When I listen to music, the lyrics can be crap, but if they sound cool and work well with the music then I really don't care... Unless it's like Red Hot Chilli Peppers Around The World bad. |

rereading what I typed, I was just basically trolling when I said that I thought it would be racist to try and rap... I mean, it's a contest, who cares? Nonetheless, there was definite truth in what I was trying to articulate.

Earlier, you seemed to suggest that your dislike of rap stemmed from an inability to relate to it. Now, you appear to be suggesting that it contains nothing worth relating to. Which is it?

I'd say that those are 2 nuts on the same sundae.
Look, I think rap sucks. I don't know what else to say. I mean I guess I like some of the sillier Beastie Boys songs and shit like Bloodhound Gang, but I mean, basically it's something I don't see any appeal in. |

It's interesting that the two examples you've just given of rap-associated acts you're able to derive some enjoyment from both appear to feature a white-only cast.

Happenstance, man.
I like a lot of black artists. Jimi Hendrix, Donna Summer, James Brown, Michael Jackson, George Clinton, Bob Marley ETC. The list really goes on all day. So I mean, it really is unfair to rationalize my distaste of rap for being a racist thing |

You've just admitted to finding there to be nothing worth relating to as far as the experiences of black artists within a genre you've attributed to black culture go, however.
How can you claim that there's not a racial element to your views in light of this, particularly when considering that you've also gone on to make exceptions for a list of only white artists? |

Just because certain group of artists wanna glorify the behaviors of some bad people, doesn't mean that it's a representation of a race as a whole.

There are a lot of black people who rally against the messages in rap music. I think there's actually charitable groups of black folks who reject the music.

When you refer to "some bad people," can we assume that you must therefore be referring quite specifically to people within the black community?

Study: Rap Music Linked to Alcohol, Violence Download Transcript May 8, 20069:00 AM ET Heard on News & Notes A recent study by the Prevention Research Center of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation in Berkeley, Calif., suggests young people who listen to rap and hip-hop are more likely to abuse alcohol and commit violent acts. Ed Gordon discusses the issue with Denise Herd, an associate professor at the University of California Berkeley School of Public Health, and David Jernigan, executive director of the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at Georgetown University. |

Nope, there's whites and mexicans and any race that thinks it's cool to partake in criminal behavior. But rap music is the kind of music that focuses and glorifies that behavior most... I don't see how that can be argued.

If you listen to the vocals of some black artists, they're able to sing and rap in ways that white people can't. I mean, you'd probably have trouble finding a white female with the pipes of Aretha Franklin, just as you likely won't see a white guy with the pipes to rap like The Notorious B.I.G.
Some may find that offensive, but you can even read Clive Davis' book, any real music person will tell you that there's truth in that. |

Are you therefore morally opposed to any music that glorifies antisocial behavior?

It amazes me that you guys can always rage against gun culture, and then be such cheerleaders for rap music.

Okay, so it's only music that promotes violence that you're opposed to?

I'm a man of peace.
Reprise specifically, appeared to be very very angry when I pointed out that a lot of criminals were drawn to rap music. Reprise, what exactly do you have to say about this study done by the University of Berkeley? https://www.npr.org/templates/story/...toryId=5390075 |

That must mean you're totally fine with any and all rap songs that make no positive references to violence, in that case?

As an alcoholic and a fan of Green Day, don't you think it's at least a bit odd to celebrate any supposed link drawn between rap music and substance abuse?
You're just as much an example of a person that's been drawn to the songwriting of a fellow addict. |
