Default let's talk about ska

anybody big on ska 'round here? when i was younger i was into The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Let's Face It) and Reel Big Fish (Turn The Radio Off) but never really got into it.

much, much later i dated this girl and one of her favorite bands was Streetlight Manifesto. those guys are a whole new animal. i fucking loved it. around that time i checked out some other albums by some ska bands i'd heard of but found very little that i felt like i could listen to alot.

just recently a friend of mine told me about a band he was into when he lived in Chicago in the 90's called Skankin' Pickle. these guys are fucking awesome. i really dig it.

any other ska bands you guys could suggest?

lol

edit:
let me expand on that. if you think that the maturity of Reel Big Fish is equal to a two disc instrumental album, the concept and work put into Year Zero and it's accompanying websites, and the live show that NIN puts on than i think you should start your own thread about something you don't know much about.

I would recommend the English Beat. I've gotten kind of hooked on them. Their second album "Wha'ppen?" is brilliant. Start with that one. The first one "I Just Can't Stop It" is pretty good too.

oddly enough, The English Beat's I Just Can't Stop It (and Oingo Boingo's Nothing To Fear) were my first real introduction to music. my dad had them on cassette and i used to listen to them on the bus all the time when i was in the 3rd grade. i hadn't thought of them in a while. i do know that i have Wha'ppen? on vinyl. i haven't given it a spin yet though. i s'pose i will now.

i also have two Fine Young Cannibal vinyls. but i think that's a whole different animal. even if it was guys from The English Beat.

This is a fair request and I promise: I will not judge any person only as a teenager, but you will constantly remind yourselves that some of my generation judges people by their race, their belief or the color of their skin, and that this is no more right than saying all teenagers are drunken dope addicts or glue sniffers.

It's derivative and unoriginal but can be fine background music.

Streetlight Manifesto is the only ska band I can listen to.

And if you like SM you should DEFINITELY check out Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution.

Yeah, i've heard BotAR. they're good too. it seems like anything Tomas Kalnoky does is awesome.

he does seem to like redoing (or "re-envisioning" a lot of stuff. redoing Keasbey Nights. and Here's to Life was from A Call To Arms was laterr on the first streetlight album. and he's done Dear Sergio three times!!! and this shit from wikipedia:
Quote:
Similarites to Keasbey Nights

Played in order, two of the songs from Everything Goes Numb bear a resemblance to their counterparts from Keasbey Nights. For example, Everything Went Numb has some of the same mariachi influence as Dear Sergio, and Point/Counterpoint shares its lyrical style with Keasbey Nights.

Keasbey Nights is also played in the middle of Point/Counterpoint at live shows, and Failing, Flailing is sometimes played with 9mm and a Three-Piece Suit, though the latter two songs have different track numbers on their respective CDs.
but it's all good i still love it all.
