I think she meant it as a compliment, but it'll undoubtedly drive B4wlz mad, and he'll blame it on millennials and whatever "the business" is these days and "how people listen to to music now." Then, when someone writes an article about what he says, he'll blame clickbait nation for misinterpreting what he said. Then when someone calls him out on it, he'll delete one of his web pages and blame SJWs for suppressing his personal rights.

She's just saying that they wrote pop songs with high production value despite being a rock band

It's kind of like the ancient language of Sanskrit, which was designed to have a sonic effect on your nerves and your emotions.

Even if you don't know what the word means in the dictionary, it still affects you with the feeling, just the sound of that word. So even if you don't read the lyrics and follow them in a linear fashion, they do have an effect on you, just the sound of them.

Thumbs up Respect

The Grimes quote was a welcome acknowledgement that the Pumpkins were ahead of their time. She's probably thinking about songs like Love, 1979, and Beautiful. It's unfortunate that Billy never figured out how to take that next artistic step that she's referencing.

Tavi: I'm so happy [Beyonce] exists now too! Some guy on Twitter said, like, 'Oh, I'm so sad for your generation that you don't have the Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden.'

Lorde: I saw that! [Laughs]

Tavi: I was like, 'Ugh, no, we're fine. We don't need testosterone-y bands to worship...'

Lorde: [Laughs] People always say I was born in the wrong era. And I'm like, just don't. Stop."
