Maybe not really related but in the past, I have a feeling that those strings of post would have invited a lot of jeering from these jackasses. Not the case right now.

You seem more nonchalant about it. Some might argue that's nothing to be nonchalant about, or maybe even that healthy person would never talk about that. I think it's fine, though. Showing less... emotion? is a good thing.

Hey how about this one Sean. When I was 17 I hated myself and got trashed on cheap wine in town one night with my friend. A bank worker still in his uniform picked us up and took us home and fucked me without protection and I fell pregnant. He gave me his number while he was drunk but when I called back he blew me off.

I miscarried a few months later and didn't know what was happening to me. I had terrible cramps all day and thought I had a gastro bug. Then suddenly my baby came pouring out of me as I crossed the road in the middle of town. I felt it all come out into my underwear and didn't know what to do. I took my sweater off and tied it around my waist. I went into a department store and used the bathroom and kept contracting. Chunks of tissue and lots of blood passed onto the dirty tiled floor of this toilet and I wiped it up with toilet paper. Then I went to a pharmacy to ask if they knew anything about really heavy periods. The lady had an awful look on her face and asked if I could be pregnant. I said no I don't think so though the last six months had been a haze of cheap alcohol and drugs. She sent me to a doctor who did a urine test, made me sit on an absorbent pad in his office, laid me on my back on the bed and put his fingers inside me. He told me I was miscarrying and that's how I learned what a miscarriage was.

I didn't tell my parents until we were all in family therapy for my brother and one of the therapists asked how I was going. When I told the group about my miscarriage my father said angrily "You're always making it about you. We're here for your brother. We told you about the risks. You are a grown up and you need to take responsibility for your choices."

I ate a bunch of painkillers about a month later and that was suicide attempt #1.

I keep thinking about this. It's so fucken hardcore

Thanks for reading Bonnie. It makes me feel better to know someone thought about it, less alone I guess. I'm sorry if it disturbed or anything like that.

I always figured you had a hell of a back story. But I never would have guessed...

your story just reinforces my belief that 90% of parents are fucking useless. They either fail to protect their children or they fail to understand their children.

what I've never been able to understand, is how so many people with kids completely forget how what it was like to be a teenager. I hear it all the time with the breeders I work with. They complain about the behavior of their teenagers as if they have no capacity to relate to them. As if they themselves were never that age, never did anything stupid, never had a crush on somebody they shouldn't have, never got high or drunk, etc. etc.

i dunno, nobody knew what a teenager was before 1950 or so

it's a market made designation, it is not of particular import. i personally think the impetus society lays on it is the problem, not the state of being one.

what you say about the creation of teen culture is true. But you could also look at is a the failure of parents to understand adolescents.

100 or more years ago sending a girl off at the age of 15 to marry a 20 year old guy would have been considered normal and a good thing for her.

My parents were married and having kids at the age of 18. Today even that would seem too young to most people.

primarily it's that it's a great age to sell things to, and that means puffing up their self importance and convincing them that they Absolutely Must Have to Buy/Covet This Thing. since their life experience is shorter and their wisdom is nil, their defenses against this sort of thing are fairly poor.

major media outlets make teenagers think this is the Most Important Time of Their Life, instead of an awkward, hormonal, pain in the ass that's not really that important as long as you do well in school and stay off the booze and drugs

the scary part is the amount of marketing now directed toward preteens and very young children.

it's viewed as a way of securing brand loyalty. If a child picks up a Pepsi habit in elementary school they'll usually identify with that brand their entire life.

uhh...sounds like it is very important but 'major media outlets' stress the importance of the wrong things.
