ooo I bet there will totally be some guitar and violins, and some light percussion for like 15 minutes... then suddenly there will be ALOT OF REALLY LOUD guitar and violins and percussion, and then it will lower again. repeat repeat

this, this long-playing record, a thing we made in the midst of communal mess, raising dogs and children. eyes up and filled with dreadful joy – we aimed for wrong notes that explode, a quiet muttering amplified heavenward. we recorded it all in a burning motorboat.source |

Don't bend ascend was terrible. That's the last one I bothered with.

when i saw SMZ in 2005 for 6$ it was amazing.
but right, it hasn't been the same in the past few years, with their more "punk" band approach... |

I blacked out on whiskey and cymbaltas at their show in St. Louis in 2008, and started heckling the singer about Jeremiah Chapter 31 and the New Covenant. Didn't get thrown out, somehow. Was discovered later on by my friend with my leg hanging out of a locked stall in the men's, cozied up to the toilet, face stuck to the floor
I can only remember the 1st ten or fifteen minutes of the show, but there was a lot of long dirty hair, sanctimonious jawing, and the keen smell of farts |

F#A# > He has left us alone > slow riot > sings sign rebuilder > lift your skinny fists > born into trouble > telegraphs in negative I could easily live with only F#A#, he has left us alone, and sings sign rebuilder and be done with it, even though "lift yr skinny fists" changed my life. Those Set Fire to Flames records have held up exceptionally well. |

born into trouble was the last good ASMZ record. they turned into a rock and roll band after that. stars/no stars is a pretty good song but too many vocals too many drums too much ego.

"this is our punk-rock" doesn't sound very rock n roll to me. i enjoyed it a lot at the time and even thought it was ok for godspeed to disband because SMZ was expanding nicely, but then yeah it became somewhat more standard rock.

i really took those records (original GYBE and original SMZ) as being 'of their time' though, sort of zeitgeist if you will... so yeah it's not the same to revisit them 10-20 years later.
