Pop to me has always represented a super-melodic, catchy, safe or easily digestible type of music. Of course the true definition of pop is "popular" so technically anything that's been released that's sold a bunch of copies could be considered pop... But I don't really see it that way.

Even so, bands like Nirvana definitely have pop elements. Same with Soundgarden. Black Hole Sun is pretty much a straight up pop song.

Really? How is Black Hole Sun "pretty much a pop song?" It's grunge with elements of psychedelia and hard rock. Not pop at all.

Now if you had said that All Apologies was pretty much a straightforward pop song I would be inclined to agree with you. But nothing Soundgarden has ever done approaches that.

It's a pop song because it was popular, and especially because that sound represents a markedly more palatable phase of Soundgarden's career in comparison with their earlier music.

however it's not "pop" in the sonic sense that the goo goo dolls are with tons vocal harmonies and and copious hooks, 4 chord major key progressions with light distortion, etc, which is more in the vein of what most people would consider 90s pop music.

but come on dude, grunge is not a thing, it's a label invented by people who wanted to sell flannel shirts

I was reading some article awhile back that mentioned how the Goo Goo Dolls got screwed by an awful record contract and pretty much saw no royalties or money from their records when they were at their popularity peak.

It was mentioned on one of those click-bait lists, so I'm not sure the validity of it but it would explain why they're still slogging it out playing mostly old music. The band really is conducive to a live setting though. I'd definitely go see em again.
