That's why I said it's the greatest opening line to a rock song ever.

Yeah the first verse is pretty great. Unfortunately the next one ("Living makes me sick...") isn't.

nah I always loved "Living makes me sick / so sick I wish I'd die." One of Bill's favorites, too.

was listening to wbftt/bodies and on the latter the vocals are suffused with senescentness.

especially near the end "..all my blisters now reveal.." so fucking dark and evil and then his voice cracks and shit during the "..no bodies.." part

oh god I feel like monte!

Bodies is an incredible song altogether. The lyrics are fantastic and his voice is at its best. I love the way he sings "the tragedies reside in you" part.

Cherub Rock has the greatest opening to a rock song ever. The first minute of that song is pure gold. Great intro to SD too.

And the last minute of thru the eyes of ruby.

I am torn on ruby. After hearing all those totally badass live versions, with the solos and the main riff repeated, power chords vibrating the very testes of GOD HIMSELF... goddamn.

but the studio version has that dreamy outro... the very essence of meloncollie.

Those two outros are honestly my two favorite pieces of music ever written

I wonder why they never tried playing the dreamy outro live, or tried playing the Rocket excerpt after Ruby instead of Porcelina, but instead wrote the most badass thing ever

Dusty and Pistol Pete is one of those songs where everything came together and painted a picture beautifully. The strings set the stage for a western tragedy; at face value the subject matter is melodramatic and over the top and yet Bill still pulled it off with amazing conviction in his delivery and made it work.

I mentioned it way earlier in this thread when I brought up In The Arms Of Sleep, but the band's greatest strength, far as I'm concerned, was their ability to craft their lyrics and music seamlessly to form vivid imagery.

Totally get this in the Porcelina verses.

Wow, I love reading through this thread so much.

Personally I love Drown (alt. guitar solo) from about 4:15 -5:00.
Ruby outro > Mellon Collie nighttime version.
Porcelina from the lost 94 tapes on the Vieuphoria dvd.
And the outro from Whir, from about 3:20.

I know everyone knows this but the lead guitar on the second verse of obscured is heart-rendingly pretty.

oh and the slide guitars on in the arms of sleep

I really like the rising sound effect that leads into the band's intro to rhinoceros. If you spin around a bunch of times really fast, then bite a lemon, then lie down and listen to it on headphones, it feels like a baby rhinoceros ascending your spinal cord all the way to your brian stem

Then you get those kickas hippy guitars/bass amblin along to that trippy groove
