I'll always regard Billy as one of the best lyricists of all time. However, he's also proven more than capable of writing some straight-up garbage lyrics (especially in recent years). What are some lyrics that made you facepalm and say, "Oh, fuck this song"? Here are some off the top of my head...

It goes way beyond lyrics. That song sounds too much like "Whenever I Call You Friend" by Loggins and Nicks, which is much better song, and that's saying something. Owata is worse than Run2Me.

Completely agree, though I feel the song is insightful in its own way - it's very vivid and precise in depicting a certain kind of angry mysogny. I think Ava Adore is similar. The reason they both make me uncomfortable is that there's such a strange mix of self-awareness and glamorization there. I can't decide whether they are an exploration of male violence/entitlement, or just an outburst of it. Probably both.

No one is treating lyrics like that. Also, I don't think it's this tension that makes them interesting. There are very few things as uninteresting as a display of self-righteous male violence. I said that Billy's depictions of violence can be interesting, but only because in some way he's aware that his anger is dysfunctional. My ambiguous feelings about the songs have to do with the fact that he doesn't push that awareness far enough. Sometimes he gets dangerously close to self-righteous anger.

By and large, Billy's love songs aren't about the person he "loves". They are about Billy. They are about his needs, and his suffering, and his desires. We don't really get a sense of the person on the other side at all. For the record, I think XYU is well-written. It's terribly violent and misogynistic, but it isn't a bad song. It's an ugly, hard-to-stomach song. A lot of his work has to do with grappling with trauma and abuse, and having a really hard time knowing how to be a decent person. It's about trying hard to be a good human, and having glimpses of what could be, but often failing. XYU is about him failing. XYU comes from the same place as his threats to break that trans woman's legs in the early 90s. It comes from the same place as his vicious attacks on Devi.

I used to think there was hope for him. Perfect is lovely, a refusal to grow bitter and to lash out on a misogynistic caricature of his own making. Friends as Lovers is good too. Blank Page is absolutely beautiful, a sincere moment of reckoning with his own ugliness and violence.

But I stand by my opinion that those lines from Behold! The Nightmare are bad. They are objectifying, they don't really convey any warmth or love for the other person, and they make her responsible for his feelings. "You're so cruel in all you do" - no. He's not the center of the world, but he still acts like everything she does is about him. And then comes the self-aggrandizing "But still I believe, I believe in you". Way to play the "good guy". It works in the context of the album, maybe, because it's a very conflicted record. But it doesn't stand on its own as a beautiful moment. At least XYU is honest about its ugliness.

A lot of people seem to be criticizing how the lyrics read like an unnecessarily repetitive poem, but lyrics aren't intended to be read. Repetition is a feature of music.

Somehow it never occurred to me that Astral Planes was two phrases that repeat over and over. And it's not a bad song either.

Repetition is a feature of music. Somehow it never occurred to me that Astral Planes was two phrases that repeat over and over. And it's not a bad song either.
