i like how EMI "squashed" the last thing they could have made decent money off with the SP name on it
i'm sure that's really how it worked but they happily bankrolled an earphoria reissue

wouldn't it be great to watch billy crying on stage 12 years ago about breaking up a band he'd release another album as within 7 years

it's more fun to pretend SP did in fact die in 2000 and anything after that doesn't really matter

his feelings aren't less real or meaningful because SP came back. sure, the legacy is tainted and the final show wasn't final but the emotion put into it was as if it was final and is thus authentic

it's like the last look at the corgan we all grew up with - or i should say, i grew up with.

one last massive self indulgent wank to pretend like the band was over when it turns out surprise it wasn't actually

REM declined to do a "Farewell tour" or show specifically because they rightly noted that it would be a big self indulgent wank fest

the reason why rem broke up was because michael stipe wanted to reblog more photos of gay homosexual men on tumblr and not be disturbed...

people change their minds about things. do you think he realized he'd be bringing SP back shortly? if not, the moment is still genuine. why wouldn't it be?

it is self indulgent but that has always been the band. now people don't stand for it cause the music isn't there. but billy corgan has been self indulgent the entire length of his career.

you're really overly concerned with genuine feelings instead of rational thought and it annoys the living piss out of me

i can still think it is genuine emotionally and fufilling emotionally while also realizing it ended up being bullshit and he ruined the band. its called compartmentalization and when done purposefully it is helpful.

why can't you enjoy it for what it was at the time without tying it to the bad things and ruining it?

i value both, but we usually disagree on the emotional stuff which is why we argue, or you basically snipe me is more accurate

because i thought it was a self-indulgent exclusionary wank fest at the time and it's so profoundly irrelevant now i dunno why people still yet clamor for this thing when they could move on to something happening now and enjoy it for what it is in the moment instead of shedding nostalgic tears over an event that ended up having absolutely no relevance or meaning

i was in chicago for those last shows and i had fun but i did think it was a bit cheap and self-congratulatory to play two "last shows" one at a major american sports arena and another at a small club and then watch as the superfans tried to out fan each other to get into this last thing that turned out not to be a last thing at all it was just the last show with james iha

@trots

i can understand that

i personally was not keeping up with the band in 2000, for some really crappy personal reasons. so i didn't really experience the whole "end of the band" like everyone else did.

so thats possibly why i hold it in such esteem, although i don't care that much. i would like to see it, but if i dont its not a big deal.

you obviously have no interest in this at all which makes sense after your explanation.

is there anything you'd be excited about billy releasing?

I actually was keeping up with the band, i was still trying to convince myself that i liked Machina, and went to chicago and it seemed like a big deal at the time but the concert i went to wasn't exactly that good. It had its moments but there was a full third of it with horrible keys added to songs that don't have keys, also it was amazing to me at the time because i'd seen at total of 6 concerts and 3 of them were SP and and another was Everclear (Ben Folds Five in 97 or so is still good in hindsight) and now that i've seen 123092183091 shows it's not even in the top ten once you extract the big communal gathering which was pretty special, i won't deny. The show was very indulgent and it was okay at the time because i believed this was the end but now that it's not, yeah it does cheapen it absolutely, i'm not really sure how it doesn't.

No there's really nothing I'd be excited about him releasing, especially not from a period some 12 years past. I don't care about demos, unreleased material, mashed potatoes or concert tapings whatsoever and i've really never been. I did the collect all the SP tracks evar thing back in 2000 and they were all underwhelming and to this day i delete bonus tracks from expanded deluxe editions of important albums because i don't fucking care, it's like adding extra cut chapters to Catch-22. The first time I downloaded Pink Flag by Wire and it came with two bonus tracks, I deleted them immediately and listened to the album in full as it was released. Then I read later that Wire themselves regretted adding those tracks, and took them off the most recent reissue, because they thought that it changed the album too much and i loved them for that.

I would be happy if he released something that was under either his name or a new band name (wether the band is a collaborative effort or a solo project wouldn't matter), and I would like to see him return to at least some relevance but i think he, like his fans, are so backwards looking that they've been entirely cut off from anything that's been released in modern rock since that there's absolutely no way for him to even connect or create anything that wouldn't be a mess.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Trotskilicious again.

good post

i really would like it if he dropped the name. it is really dumb. i dont really consider it the same band i guess. they are not much associated in my mind

i think it's important for him to let go and he should have let it die in 2000 but i think that he changed his mind later because he was finding it harder for people to notice what he was doing outside of his super famous band and zeitgeist was a cynical move to try and recapture that glory and it hilariously failed and now we have just a string of embarrassing bullcrap that he's putting together under the SP name and a bunch of crap about how fans like me who don't like him using the SP name to release new material are "stuck in the past" when in actuality we're more forward looking than he is, recording under a band name that he was famous for once 15+ years ago

if he doesn't want to play old songs or recreate the SP feeling then why use the name? it's dumb, he's dumb.
