Default Mayonaise - Work in progress

Started working on a cover of Mayonaise for my mom's birthday. It has been her favorite SP song since i started listening to them.

https://soundcloud.com/#burnthelies/...ver-unfinished

I'm looking for a little criticism on the tones and drums.
I don't have a Kimberly Kay guitar to do the squeals so i'm gonna have to fake that next. I'm not too happy with the solo tone. The phaser on it is a crappy plugin. I may just order a Phase 90 since i've only got a Boss flanger for modulation in the pedal collection at the moment. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The signal chain goes as follows:

James "weird tuned guitars"(1 on each side): Gibson SG Standard > Sustain Punch Creamy Dreamer > Diezel Herbert > Mesa Traditional 4x12 > Shure Beta 57

Left guitar = Same chain but with my '76 body/'74 neck hardtail strat with Corgan pickups.
Right guitar = Same chain but my PRS Singlecut with Duncan JB

Bass: Fender Blacktop P Bass > Line 6 Pod X3

I programmed the drums with FLStudio using Steven Slate kits modified a bit.

The drums are definitely the most accurate I've heard. Maybe turn the ride up louder (I can't hear any at all). JC's snare is tuned higher than that, too, if that's something you can control.

Guitar tone sonuds really good too. Are you going to ******* the intro?

I hope you keep it instrumental. I for one hate covers where I have to listen to some random guy sing over a good song.

I can go inside the slate plugin and tune the snare up. It's actually a doubled snare so i'll try tuning both up a bit.
I will be including the intro and outro for sure also.
It kinda bothers me that i'm using the Creamy Dreamer instead of my vintage big muff. The Muff is in bad shape needing some rewiring.

I planned on doing the vocals myself for my mom but i can also post a full instrumental version.

Thanks for your comments. If you have any other suggestions let me know!

the tuning in SSD is pretty awful. you have a nice low end on the snare- if you tune them both up you risk losing it to the point EQ can't fix it. if possible send each of the snares to a different output and tune one of them up ~+2. EQ the pitch tone out of the lower snare then blend the two together.

if this doesnt work (if they clash now), pitch both up and send to an aux return and pitch shift them down a bit. compress the fuck out of this signal and blend with the original.

It's pretty damn close. To get closer I think it needs a touch of that upper-mid hiss in the distortion. The SD tone sounds a little more like it's just on the edge of completely breaking up.

I still don't know why you would want to do a cover trying to sound exactly like the original.

I agree completely about other people singing Pumpkins songs; I just can't stand it. Maaaybe if the singing took a completely different approach, definitely not if the singer tried to match Mr. Corgan's take.

Sounds pretty damn good. Nice work.

The only thing I'd recommend taking a look at... the high-hat 1-2 parts(I don't really know drum lingo)... sounds a little loud. Too much "crash." I'm referring to the parts like at 14 seconds, 17.5 seconds, and so on throughout the song. If that was lower, it'd sound pretty close to the original.

Again, nice work.

It is. I'm going to redo the solo with a real phaser too. The software phaser is just terrible.

More ride - but will difficult to get the swing right with samples though I guess and it's v low on the record anyway. Good fun stuff... + don't forgot the tambourine!

Worked on it a little more today. Intro and outros added. Messed with the solo a bit more. Not too sure that i like the tone.

If you are looking to replicate the album sound as closely as possible, kill some of the reverb on the lead on the intro/outros. You're looking for a rounder, bassier sound and the reverb is making it seem more trebley/tinny than it does on SD. Also less chorus. Also the higher note at 43 seconds is done by whatever you call that technique where you just lightly touch the string without putting pressure on it on the 12th fret so it rings out clear and with lots of sustain. Should be high E string. Not sure how you are tuned, but yeah.

the solo sounds great to me. Billy's tone on the album is even more squelched up and compressed though, and more phaser I think

Hey SP, are the cleans from the bridge the herbert? Still trying to find a clean that I like, I have jmp1/ADA+strategy. Anyway cover sounds great! As for the squeals maybe just crank it and try to get some feedback and edit it after? Will be tough for sure.

Would you be willing to post the drum track? Then everyone can have a go at their own version of mayonaise.

Dually noted! I'm going to go back over the intro for sure with less reverb and i'm ordering a Phase 100 shortly. The old Boss BF2 just didn't cut it. The harmonic is there at :43 but dead strings just don't work for it. Sounds like balls the more i listen to it.

Thanks! The cleans are the Herbert channel 1 with a Gibson SG Standard.
I'm not sure how i'm gonna handle the squeals yet. The Herbert is a super quiet amp regardless of gain level so i'm gonna be chasing that.

Possibly. If i can nail the song down enough i might buy the license to actually release it. I'll most likely post the drums later on.

I'd usually just hit some harmonics in place of the squeals.

3rd fret harmonics on the 6th string matches the pitch of the squeel.
