it's not really the behaviors, it's how much time you spend on the behaviors
plus scotty's talked about his eating disorder. if you spend hours obsessing over how many times you chew your food, there's a problem. calorie counting can be obsessive, especially with an ED feel better soon |

The house maybe but I'm pretty extreme with the vehicle. Wash it twice a week regardless of weather, park in the furthest most isolated spot available, must he garage kept even at airports. It's kinda embarrassing really.

It's not about mental illness it's about how society has marginalized certain phrases and minimized their impact because they don't understand language.
OCD in common vernacular is basically synonymous with being a neat freak. Is it right? No but when is society?

absolutely, "Depressed" is the same. It's synonymous with sadness in popular vernacular but really implies a very prolonged period. You know, like an economic depression.

If you're in therapy you've probably already learned about ERP (exposure and response prevention) I've studied and practiced the techniques and it really works wonders.
A good technique is if you're freaking out about something or obsessing over something at any given minute is to just let those thoughts flow by as if they were on a conveyor belt. This will cause anxiety and take practice but a big help that helped me significantly was if I set a certain amount of time later in the day that I would allow myself to think about or consider whatever was causing me anxiety. This way your not "neglecting" whatever it is that is so agitating or what you're obsessing about. You'll simply set a time to think about it and let it go at that moment. This really helps the compulsive aspect of the disorder and allows you to stop obsessing and to live in the now so to speak. - And hey, if you feel at the time that you really must think about what's bothering you and that it really is worth obsessing about- you'll have the set amount of time later in the day to think about it. You'll be surprised how many times you'll reach that "time" and you won't even give a shit anymore. It takes practice. But if you really wanna get over this mind numbing disorder you'll have to work hard at it. Pretty much we're brought up and raised a certain way and our brains and thought process sort of develops and we "get stuck in our ways" so to speak. It's so easy not to recognize this as most people will think "this is just the way my mind works, nothing I can do about it". You really just have to retrain your minds way of thinking. It's not like you consciously wanted to have OCD, but your minds used to thinking in that way so you have to train it not to... Just as if someone was weak and skinny, they'd have to work out and train to get strong. It's the same thing with the brain and the mind. |

that sounds similar to the CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) used in my improv for anxiety class. each week we were to (voluntarily) perform "exposures" outside of class - could be as big or as little as we wanted. we learned to seek out anxiety-inducing actions in order to (at best) quell the anxiety or (at least) not give it so much power.
after that weekly session we would head over to second city for the actual improv part of the course. |

Yeah it is a form of Cognitive behavioral therapy. It really works wonders. I sought it out and studied a lot of the formulas in order to better myself some years ago. Best decision I've ever made.
That improv stuff sounds cool though. It would definitely help in concurring different forms of social anxiety. |
