in my body is probably my favorite machina song.. no joke. love the vibe of that one. billy just did some demonstrations of the mix on his instagram, isolating the different tracks. recorded live on the pumpkin land floor. honestly when they'd record live like that, i think that's where'd they'd come up with their best recordings from that period.

I found a cassette rip of machina last night and I have to say, I am truly astounded by how gorgeous and warm and full it sounds.
You hear glorious warmth and fuzz and beautiful saturated tape.

It's honestly renewed my interest in machina, which is one of my favorite albums.

Ok, I'm totally back into the Machina reissue again after this; hearing no-vox mix of in-my-body and not just seeing another post saying "hey guyz, found another 'vox up front' mix of track x". I'm so fickle.

You really can hear how dreamy and billowy the guitars are on This Time.
Virex is distorted and saturated but at a beautiful level.

Also. It won't let me pm you houseofglass

Was it common for records to sound different due to having a different master/mix on cassette back when that was a viable format?

The mastering is no different, it is the format that is different.
So the argument is what sounds better? Cassette, cd, or vinyl?
They are different formats with different sounds and aspects.

This is a rip I found last night that I thought sounded interesting.

The mix is no different but the elements of tape bring out things in different places and ways that you otherwise may not notice in a different format.

After listening to some of this, it's definitely the best version of Machina I've heard. More clarity, depth, and detail, warmer bass. The guitars jump out more. I can hear things that were buried on other versions, like the acoustic guitar on Raindrops and some of the spacey guitar on Try Try Try. This will be my go to version, it's miles better than the og CD mastering. Thx Jakob

the basic lesson is that you have to master differently for cd vs vinyl and cassettes have natural compression due to the format

people shit on cassette but for a lot of music was recorded on tape

Any further requests for the pm will be henceforth forwarded directly to the bald lord himself so that the special division can be notified.
