Don’t hate on “cover bands.”
In the big three music cities (NYC, LA, and Nashville,) they are the “bread and butter” of a lot of well-known pro musicians between high-profile gigs. And it take a shit ton of skill to learn 50 tunes by ear overnight and play that shit right. In smaller towns, they give working musicians excellent opportunities to get their chops together and make some money. Every healthy musical ecosystem needs cover bands. |

This is expected of professional musicians in NYC, LA, and Nashville. You literally don’t get work unless you can do it. It’s bare minimum competency. And I’m not talking about just learning to play the songs. You have to OWN that shit.
Typically if you are new in town you just network until you get called for a “sub” gig. That typically goes something like this, “hey man, my bassist can’t make it for tomorrow night....here’s the song list, can you do it?” And if you learn those 50 songs and nail the gig, you might start to get called back and progress beyond subbing. If you don’t cut it, the phone stops ringing. Kenny Aronoff is that kind of guy, for example. And, judging by how he plays, Jeff Schroeder as well. |

You think Jeff can learn 50 songs overnight?
I doubt it. |

I think the "50 songs in one night" thing was a slight exaggeration, but the point still holds up. Jeff probably knows the overwhelming majority of the band's uncatalogued, or can learn it quickly. Jeff and Ginger each learned something like 60 songs during the first three months in the band in 2007. In his book, Kenny mentioned that he had to know all the songs from all the previous albums. Even though Billy only played songs like "Zero" or "Today" once or twice in 1998, the band had to be ready in case Billy called an audible and had them play something random.

I dunno. The competence he displays musically and personally tells me he thinks like a professional session type guy. All those guys have that skill. So yeah probably. It’s not that hard once you figure out how to do it. I recently did 30 in two days for a quick gig, and that will be considered slow once I relocate to NYC.
You just have to know your key signatures and be able to hear and conceptualize what you hear. Then you just attack it systemically (“eight note anticipation, got it....V chord, got it...etc.) Watch what this guy does: https://youtu.be/0pjaDiZvDLs |

Shit, that's insane
I probably know 95% of the pre-2000 SP stuff on drums, but that's from listening to them constantly over 7 years (and having no life lol) |
