I actually would not have minded if that was real. I'll take lame dad jokes and self-awareness of his ridiculous song titles over conspiracy theories and more gripes about the music industry. I figured that post was too down-to-earth for Corgan, however.

They were always ridiculous. Some of them, anyway.

If anything, "Solara" is more akin to "Starla" or "Soma" or something like that. Whether it'll sound like those songs...

Come on, if "Hello Kitty Kat" was mooted as a new song title there'd be scoffing on these boards. Same goes for any of those titles. Like, what's "mayonnaise" got to do with one of his strongest and emotional melodies and lyrics?

The band didn't tease those song titles for months before releasing them. Also, all of those songs are awesome, which more than makes up for any randomness in name titles.

it's hard to believe but the pumpkins in the Gish/SD, and to some extend MCIS days, were SILLY. REALLY FUCKING SILLY dancing around in dresses and shit

all those dumb song names were fine because the pumpkins were a dumb, silly band.

it's jarring now because billy has spent most of his time since Adore being a Very Serious Artist and a grumpy old bastard. Solara and Toodleoo from this prick seems contrived but would've been fine from the old band with the old attitude. well thanks for reading bye

i was a latecomer when i bought TAFH (only had MCIS and SD) and i checked out the discography in the booklet and i thought all the song names sounded so cool i had to get all the CDs i was missing.
the one that struck me the most was 'girl named sandoz' but then i found out it was a cover.

they had a sense of humor about them and billy seemed like a more joyful person. so when they got really dark, or maudlin, or angry, it all felt natural to accept because billy was radically vulnerable with his songwriting. now it all feels fake, he seems joyless and has no sense of humor about himself or life

Billy actually had a sharp sense of humor before he thought he was Bowie

I agree, the early Pumpkins were very goofy. That was part of their appeal I guess. And then suddenly they make this amazing sounding album (SD) which pushes them to the mainstream.

They still were goofy (video for Today for example) but after 1994 things got serious. "Rat in a cage" and "infinite sadness" and all that.

Corgan felt it was his lofted position to provide a soundtrack and a voice for the disaffected youth of the 90s. Instead of just being the singer of a band.

That translated to darkness and gothic imagery. Zwan brought back more of a lighthearted approach, but the imagery now is more serious and contemplative (recent band photo for example). The James Iha photo of them in the studio was a little nod to the past, but in the past that kind of photo would've been the official photo.

That's actally true, I never thought about it before but they were a very goofy band who didnt take themselves too seriously before they became mega stars.
