thank you MyFailingHeart!!
i was hoping someone else was thinking the same thing i was.
this has been driving me nuts. alot of the people around here wouldn't know Rites of Spring from emo from an asshole on their elbow, yet continue to use the term in wildly inaccurate context. no musical perspective at all.
thanks again!

Every rock genre there is has good and bad shit. Emo gets a really bad rep these days but there are lots of really awesome bands that have been labeled as emo at some point. Most kids who whine about emo are really just mad about seeing kids with eyeliner get more women then them.

Isn't all music by definition emotionally driven? Emo seems to be more of an image statement than a musical style.

just like Grunge was all about flannel shirts?????????

You got it all wrong. Take a look at the 'image statements' of say At the drive in vs Cursive vs Rites of Spring vs Fugazi vs MCR. There is no link. Even the uber sad emo Dashboard Confessional has very little in common with the 'emo style' bands that so many people hate.

Bottomline: If you go around declaring that emo sucks just because you don't like MCR, Fallout boy, and the kids with eyeliner and black clothing then you are not only ignorant but you are an asshole.

Just share the damn word. It defines way too many things, and none of the people who use it a certain way want it to be associated with the others. The word is pretty much undefinable at the moment as it encompasses too many things, and ranges from genres to lifestyles. Hell, there are people who call those who listen to indie music "emo." The word is pretty much a useless generalization at the moment. It will only be definable when we look back at this era, define it and subdivide it.

my failing heart is actually the name of my band. i just registered here to make a point about "emo". i had been looking around for info on the new pumpkins album and came across netphoria and was shocked at the amount of ignorant comments about "emo". i guess the whole debate is pointless since i'm sure we can all agree that labels are dumb anyways. sorry if i offended anyone.
feel free to delete this thread.

unfortunately now it is. i can only wish for the days when "emo" referred to all the post-hardcore bands from the Midwest and DC in the mid 90's. like Braid for gods sake? they were amazing. the first Sunny Day Real Estate record. emo was heart on your sleeve lyrics and raging guitars in most cases. first it was co-oped by the singer/songwriter crowd, like Chris Carraba (Dashboard), he goes mainstream, the mainstream music press starts writing about this new "emo" music years after its run its course, then all of a sudden slouches like My Chemical Romance show up and they are "emo" too?? why, because they are sad and wear eyeliner? bullshit.
