the matrix is frankenstein meets the allegory of the cave

the first one is classic though. I can't say I ever need to see it again, but it is like a cultural cornerstone

I am only grateful for the first Max Payne game.

The rest, I think we could have done without.

I wouldn't call it a great movie, but yeah, I wouldn't underestimate its novelty and influence.

It's one of those movies that really shouldn't had had a sequel, though. Like, at the end when he's all like "hahaha fuck you Matrix I'm Digital Jesus now and I'm gonna fuck ur system up" and then flies toward the screen and the credits roll, just because that implies further story doesn't mean that you actually need to see the further story. It just works better when the continuation of the adventures is something left to inference for that sort of movie.

For example, none of the fight scenes in any of the sequels had any tension or stakes, because at that point, you already know that Neo is digital Jesus and none of these NPCs he's fighting mean anything to him. The fights are more just demonstration of 2000s special effects than anything else. Even in movies of that sort, fight scenes should still be scenes, and need to advance the story or demonstrate character in some way, instead of just being interruptions to the flow of the story. The fight scenes in the first one told story. In the other ones they were just kinda there.

I remember loving it in middle school and I saw it again maybe last year and it was actually laughably awful in almost every way.

I understand why Alan Moore refuses to allow his name in the credits of Hollywood adaptations of his work.

The action sequences in the sequels also relied heavily on CGI which looked badly dated even five years later let alone now. The fight scene in the 2nd one with the hundred Agent Smiths looks insanely bad

I loved it when it came out. I haven't seen it in awhile but I doubt I would think it is laughably awful. Who knows I guess, but I remember it being done very beautifully and sublimely at parts.

You'll be sorry when you realize that I hid the cure to cancer somewhere in the second act of Hollow Man and can't find the box in your new apartment after a move.

I remember Natalia Portman managing to produce a half-convincing British accent in a couple of scenes.

They should've gotten the other Natalie Portman. The one that comes with the accent built in.

re: you guys ripping on the original Matrix plot

this James Cameron quote (about the original Terminator) actually says it better than I can:

Quote:
Casting Arnold Schwarzenegger as our Terminator, on the other hand, shouldn't have worked. The guy is supposed to be an infiltration unit, and there's no way you wouldn't spot a Terminator in a crowd instantly if they all looked like Arnold. It made no sense whatsoever. But the beauty of movies is that they don't have to be logical. They just have to have plausibility. If there's a visceral, cinematic thing happening that the audience likes, they don't care if it goes against what's likely.

i mean there's no sense in picking apart something that's obviously very sci-fi, and is only used as a plot device.

i mean thom yorke's lazy eye is far worse than the matrix's plot holes, but he made it big, right?

when plots are internally inconsistent that bothers me, but I'm usually pretty good at accepting whatever devices the narrative wants me to take for granted. I'm along for the ride and I don't mind accepting the rules of a fictive universe. There's a reason a compelling narrative doesn't look much like most of our real life days.

The connection here is that colonizing Mars has about as much purpose as a Matrix sequel

if the Matrix sequels had caused a tech boom that spun off entire industries you would be correct

If the increase of funding for NASA is taken directly out of Warner Bros. studios' budget, much the better.

The James Cameron quote kind of hinges on how movies "just have to have plausibility."

Standards will differ from one person to the next, which is probably why movies aimed at children can afford to be a little more relaxed when it comes to things like character depth and coherence in general.

One quote I like is "you can ask an audience to believe the impossible, but not the improbable." Like, you can have a your main character fly and shoot lasers from her eyes, but if she is a computer hacker who guesses the password for a high-security system on her first try by trying random letters, that's dumb.

It's okay if protected servers have a visual interface and "success screen" for backdoor entry, though.
