It helps that lyrics are included with the CD and vinyl. That said, a lot of the vocabulary is almost old-english and not that easy to grasp casually.

Is love a fool
A brackish goad?
Protected like
A lilac cove
Becomes by the breath of the sun
Denuded and diffused

My thoughts on the new album. 1-5 stars (5 being best):

Overall, decent album. A lot better than MTAE. I hated almost every song on that album, and only barely tolerated "Run to Me". Ogilala gives me hope. Really liked Aeronaut - the strings brought me back to the Mellon Collie era. Also, some of the dreamy melodies in Spaniards really felt like old SP.
  • Zowie - 3 stars

  • Processional (Ft.*James*Iha) - 2.5 stars (sadly, since James Iha is the man, I expected more - wtf. This was really a 2 star song but I upped it by half a star, because fuck it, it's James Iha - ).

  • The Spaniards - 3.5 stars

  • Aeronaut - 4 stars (would have been 4.5 stars if not for the repetition of "lovers mourn for me" at the end of the song)

  • The Long Goodbye - 3 stars

  • Half-Life of an Autodidact - 2 stars

  • Amarinthine - 1 stars (Billy, please don't ever write this kind of song again. awful.)

  • Antietam - 1.5 stars ( ugh - similar reaction to Amarinthine).

  • Mandarynne - 3 stars

  • Shiloh - 2 stars

  • Archer - 3 stars

Have just sent an E-Mail asking if the DLP hasn't been released or immediately sold out.
"WHAT RECORDS??" might be the typical answer...

On AMAZON UK it has never been listed.

So we're all still using this thread to talk about the album because none of us felt like buying it, right?

I bought a copy, because well, it's a step in the right direction. I'm surprised as well.

I hear it daily on National Pubic Radio.
I'm waiting for the double vinyl release. It will be more collectible than WPC's edition, immidiate sell out.

And I'll buy JIMMY's new record.

Got a QUICK answer:

"Currently unavailable.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Cheers

So, there's still hope...

Also low is Ogilala by Billy Corgan (as William Patrick Corgan). The Smashing Pumpkins lead released his first solo album, TheFutureEmbrace, in 2005, giving him a number 31 album. Ogilala was only able to garner number 183 in its first week.

The vocals are really the issue. While his voice is certainly stronger, and he doesn't need to scream to reach the high notes, I don't really like the sound it makes. It's not what I'd like to hear from Billy Corgan; too much vibrato and too many too-high notes (which he reaches, I just don't like them). If he'd made 10 songs singing them like "Soothe" or "To Sheila", then I'd be on for it.

That prevents me from getting into the songs. Pity, as I'm sure musically they are nice.

As for a new SP album, he seems to be pretty conscious about what constitutes the "old sound" and has made mention of how they used to layer the vocals. He did say he wished to record an album of the old style with the old members. So hopefully the vocals will be more SD, less Zeitgeist.

The Pitchfork review brings up some fair points, even if I think it's a more agreeable album than they do. That "Cain isn't able" lyric really is a clanger.

Weird that they hate on Zeitgeist and seem to enjoy Monuments!

"Records like Mellon Collie showed that if you bake a sour apple with enough sugar, cinnamon, and butter, you can create something truly succulent. Rubin, bizarrely, seems to believe fans only want the apple, not the crumble."

Uh... Hmmm...

how is it weird that journo A gave Zeitgeist a 4.9, journo B reviewed Monuments with a 6, and this one gave Ogi a (fair, to me) 5.7?
