Default stupid guitar gear question #593749582

is there some kind of pedal or processor available that mutes or suppresses excess noise when you don't play something perfectly? and not just feedback, i mean like when you're playing something tricky and you can't help but leave some strings ringing when you don't want them to. like if you play a pull-off and one of the strings next to it rings as well. i find this pretty much impossible to avoid sometimes, especially when playing distorted.

Nope. Pretty much the bane of the distorted electric guitar for me. I'm so sloppy that everything sounds like shit. There'd probably be a market for it out there somewhere though.

EDIT: My shitty playing i mean...

i mean, couldn't they develop a pickup that sortof detects how hard you've played a note and if its below the threshold, it would be amplified?

i wish there was a pedal that replaced the wrong notes with the right ones by hearing a key and keeping you in check. and i also wish it helped the writing process by suggesting chord changes and occasionally offering lyrical help. sometimes it gives relationship advice too.

There is not a pedal you can buy to make you not suck.

You might benefit from some compression though. Why are you asking this question? I thought you were some world class touring guitar player?

I don't understand this thread. First of all, I have always found it EASIER to play hard stuff distorted because mistakes are often masked in the white noise. Secondly, I think compression would just make things worse for him because it would bring the volume of the fuck ups up to the regular correctly picked notes. Or is this wrong? Some sort of noise gate could reduce the ringing of your other strings I guess.

Learn how to play better/cleaner or play easier things and build up. You can't cover your mistakes that easily - just learn how to practice restraint until you don't need tricks to cover your mistakes.

start a band with terrence. i hear hes the next billy corgan. my real advice, and this is not a comp out, is to practice a lot more because if youre worried about sloppy playing a pedal is not going to help you. youll get better if you play more. you wont have to worry about it anymore.

Compression is kind of a quick fix to smooth the signal out and generally make everything "sound better," which is what he seems to be looking for. All a noise gate will do (at least in guitar-pedal form) is eliminate feedback and hiss.

The only really worthwhile solution is to practice more so you don't make the mistakes to begin with.

28if is bang on.

There are noise gate pedals and rack units out there, I myself own a Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor to get rid of unwanted feedback for certain distortion pedals. However, it will only nullify feedback and hiss.

I'm not going to go into the technicalities because I'm lazy, crap at explaining stuff and I'm halfway to pissed anyway, but check out the reviews on Harmony Central for a good detailed explanation.

In a nutshell, if the strings vibrate, the unit deactivates it's suppressor function (and you hear the guitar) until the vibration is so low it doesn't detect anything and suppression kicks in again. This is adjustable, but it still wont help in this case. Even an expensive rack noise gate wont do what the OP is looking for.

There is cool feedback and then there is buzz feedback. You know, plug in a strat and crank up the volume.

There's feedback when you want it, and feedback that happens every time you mute the strings (depending on yr set up). Gets a bit annoying after a while.

We don't all get to perform on massive stages or in gigantic rehersal spaces, where yr miles away from yr amp.

i am technologically impaired, and have no way of upping any kind of recording. so you'll just have to live with that.

like other people in this thread, i just think it's funny that you're trying to find an easy way to sound proficient instead of actually being so. it's just practice, straight up.
