Default What really happened at Lollapalooza 1994?

I've heard Billy mention how he ranted at the crowd or something because he perceived there were football players(aka people who came to the show because alternative was the cool and popular thing) or something in the crowd.

Did this actually happen? I was surprised when Billy was bragging about this considering his prior rightful stance that everyone was welcome to like alternative music despite what people like Kim Gordon said about perceived "uncool" people beginning to come to shows.

you talking about 94? I was so drunk at that show i barely remember. But he used to rant on stage about that shit all the time, so i'm sure he said something stupid like that at some point or another

Cool that you were at that show. But yeah, that's crazy cause Billy was always about reaching the masses and that you didn't have to be a hipster to enjoy the music.

he would say shit like that but then he wanted cool people to worship him. he is a fame whore who can't stand that he's not the hippest guy in the room anymore.

don't buy into his bullshit!

Lollapalooza 94 at Saratoga was my first concert. And those shows were legend for him ranting at the audience. That being said, I don't recall him ranting at us that particular day.

Was at the Cal State Dominguez Hills show. It was obviously so long ago, but I do remember Billy saying he wasn't going to talk too much, because it gets him in trouble or something.

Wanted to go to Phoenix but had to return to the Midwest to go back to school.

Probably would have been one of the youngest people there. I'm sure it would've required my Dad coming with which he would have. Love you Dad.

The I Am One rant is one of the most pretentious things he ever did.

no. The line from the rant made it into a song.

the rants also evolved towards the XYU ideas as well.

Thank you both for clarifying the chronology of the band for me.

I now understand that *lyrics from zero* only has one strict interpretation: and that is that the line was taken from a song completed in 1995 and inserted into a very clearly pre-conceived "rant" that occurred over a full year prior. You have my word that my posts will thoroughly vetted going forward.

Oh Jesus Christ - this place used to be the wild west. Whatever. Since it has really rubbed people the wrong way, I edited the "R" word out.

When I said the line from Zero made it into the rant, I meant nothing more than... a specific line from Zero literally appeared in the rant, and not BILLIAM WENT INTO THE FUTURE TO EXTRACT THE LINE SO HE COULD DROP SOME FIRE SHIT. Pretty obvious he was sitting on the basic parts of the song for some time. He also went so far as to tease the riff live near the end of the tour.

Also, pop back into the world of Weezer sometime why dont ya.

so many of you have such shitty opinions on the IAO rants

it's not cringey, it's not "ok boomer" or whatever some of you dumb-asses are saying

it's an on-stage therapy session that gave birth to some of the most cathartic songs of their career, & quite frankly we'd be lucky to see even a quarter of at recent shows, Pumpkins or otherwise. the fuck is wrong with you

Please elaborate because I don’t see a man chastising a crowd who likely wasn’t there to see them anyway under the sweltering summer heat and yelling “gimme gim gim gim nothing” as therapeutic in any way other than appealing to extreme narcissism

they don't come off as chastising the crowd to me, it sounds like years of pent-up frustration finally unleashed

that's an interesting take certainly

i've heard it dozens of times and never thought of it like chastising the crowd for not being into the show
