Porcelina of the Vast Oceans
I was reading the other thread about the "prettiest" SP song when somebody mentioned "Porcelina." I have loved this song since I first head it so long ago. However, I decided to listen to it again after I read the above mentioned thread. Upon the latest listen, I noticed something somewhat ironic . . . well maybe not ironic but a certain coincidence nonetheless. When I was listening to the intro to the song (through the first 2 minutes), I noticed how Jimmy's drums sounded like the crashing of the waves of the "oceans," the "vast oceans." His rolling cymbals or whatever you want to call them, definitely sound like waves crashing against the shore. Maybe I'm listend "too hard" to it, but I can hear it. That is the ironic/coincidence that I was talking about earlier. Can you hear it? Am I just crazy? Both? Just curious what everyone or anyone else thought.

this is one of their very best songs, tho it sucked in some live-versions (especially when the started it without that after-intro-break-riff).

I am not trying to discuss how "good" or "great" this song was . . . that was established in my very first post . . . I am trying to see what people think of the intro and what I stated above.

yeah, i think they purposely made parts of the song have a ocean-wave type sound to it. besides the cymbal rolls in the beginning, there is that sound effect towards the end of the song that could also be something like a crashing wave.

Seriously, it's like realizing your parents have sex. It colors everything. Let us know if it all starts rushing in too fast and we'll try to talk you down.

Yeh, it really doesn't matter whether it was done on purpose or not, its just how you appreciate the art on its own. But I agree that it sounds very wavelike, and those echo sort of riffs during the chorus sound very oceany as well.
Truly an immortal song, I think about the motif of Porcelina as imagination. It starts off with a sort of an imaginary journey, the mind being 'the realm of soft deslusions.' And when you're hit with the line, 'as all the thought police are closing in for sleep,' it suggests an immense freedom of the mind, leading me back to the idea of imagination. Don't want to write too much about the song though :]. |

It's trite, but I noticed the "wave sounds" the first time I listened. Pretty sure you're not alone in your assessment of the song.

I didn't realize the literal connotations until this thread, personally, though it seems obvious now. Thanks

you know whats amazingly pretty? that version of By Starlight from the 97 Vancouver show that billy introduces with "Matt, please lead us into the heavens...." the way it starts is won-der-fuckin-ful. his voice kinda fucks it though.

what is ironic about it? Seriously, new ARFs should be banned for posting in the first two weeks since their registration. And they should be allowed to make new threads only after they hit 100 posts.

And the fact that you bring up an Alanis Morissette on a pumpkins board . . shame on you. Her song ironic is inronic in the sense that nothing she sings about is ironic. Now that's irony! |
