Discussion thread: Is the main objective for young people today to become famous?
and by famous i mean well-known like paris hilton or whoever
all the girls gone wild and reality shows (america's next top model, project runway, so you think you can dance, american idol, etc) seem to indicate this any takers? am i just out of touch w/ the youth of america? |

what is your main objective - or what it used to be when you were in your teenage years?
I was dreaming of NHL career |

Good thread, with the rise of the reality television fad people can become famous without having to commit their lives to the pursuit of it. many bands give up everything in pursuit of fame but with this reality telly anyone can have a pop. So no, i dont think it is the main objective bar a few desperate people, but it would be nice.

I heard somewhere that there was a study of who todays' youths wanted to model themselves after and aspire to be like, and topping the list was like Donald Trump.

i don't really know young people or see young people, so i don't really know what they like or what they think about. the only two kids i really know are my female cousin who is 13 and my male cousin who is 17. i think that the girl wants to be a vet or something dealing with animals (that was a common dream of many young girls when i was one, too), and i think that my male cousin has no idea what he wants to do (also typical). i doubt that most young people today aspire to be famous. but like someone said earlier in the thread, the possibility of becoming famous has grown (by the weakening of the idea of what it means to be famous) so it's a more attainable goal. you be famous for some youtube video and also want to be a nurse when you grow up...
i know that didn't help much but like i said, i'm clueless about kids. i decided again today that i really really don't want kids. :/ |

btw, thom wants kids. :/ i mean, not now, but definitely sometime. |

yeah, i think you're on to something there. it's a symptom of the youtube/myspace culture. kids may aspire to some career, but it's hard for them to see that far into the future and even harder to plan for it. besides, these days it seems like very few people are actually renowned for advancements or achievements in careers other than those in the media. instead people are brought to fame simply for being on television, for being rich, and for who they know. when kids see how easy it seems to be on t.v. or on the internet, they forget about working towards their career and instead lean on social services like myspace in hopes that they can become renowned for their lame and pathetic little lives.

If I could somehow work my music or art into many people's homes without being quote unquote famous, I'd be perfectly happy.
