Default Have you read Steppenwolf?

In German or English?

Really wish I could read German right now. I met a German scholar once who told me without any hint of pretension and with great emotional openness that if I liked Hesse I should really learn enough German to read his work in the original language. I haven't read any Hesse for over a decade but I'm finally reading Steppenwolf. I have a train and ferry journey to my new psychologist. The practice is in an arty part oftown, right on the water, full of galleries. I just had my first good espresso in months and I'm sitting here in this little refuge reading Steppenwolf and it feels almost like a dream.

Have you read Steppenwolf??

German is a great language. You get to make all kind of "SPRCH" sounds

I read Siddhartha first, too.

I took German for a year at high school so I know a tiny bit and have good pronunciation. But not a lot of comprehension lol.

I've read Siddhartha and Journeys to the East or whatever it's called. Both were fantastic.

yeah read it in german. it is queit gutt.

not as good as siddharta though. that's the one you really should read in german, or otherwise you won't get to enjoy the stark, minimalist, pseudobiblical language

I read half of Siddhartha sitting under a tree in a public park in Midtown KC last August or so, I think it was. I stopped after every chapter and thought about stuff.

I have read Steppenwolf. An ex-gf of mine insisted on me reading it as some kind of break-up note/message. I did some years later and I liked it. Gotta love Hermine.

are german bibles traditionally stark and minimalist because they are absolutely the opposite in the english tradition

i think the bible is traditionally held to be a book that does not try to overwhelm you with complex sentences and refined rhetorical splendor. it's supposed to be simple and earnest and direct. (note that this is just about style, not about interpretation)

of course, misdirected awe of the first comprehensive attempts to make the bible understood by laymen (king james, luther) has led people to believe that it's a book full of mysterous 'thous' and sentences that begin with 'da ward'

i personally think it's so that you need a person to interpret it and tell you what it means

when i learned latin, i (like most people) had to translate cicero and the like. authors that have a reputation of being the pinnacle of rhetoric. moving from this to the vulgate (and remember, this is exactly what literate people did when christianity spread in the empire) is like reading netphoria after reading shakespeare

i'm not saying that it isn't full of metaphors, but the sentences are very short and simple and similar in structure. and siddharta is like this in german.

I found Cicero so difficult. I think the Vulgate must be a walk in the park compared to Cicero. Did Hesse write like that because he was fairly untrained as a writer?

That was a great tip about the books with two languages, I hadn't heard of those, thanks.

yeah he's simpler than cicero but by no means as simple as the recurring structures in the vulgate

no no, i think he made a conscious effort to give the book a similar atmosphere. maybe it's just me though.

isn't this often a german stylistic trend or value? I recall being kind of amazed with how i didn't always need the subtitles in aguirre the wrath of god because all the dialog is so simplistic that it was easily comprehended across the language barrier

granted a lot of simple german words are similar to their equivalents in english
