it was the one Floyd album where I was like "this is just kind of boring"

it's really straight forward in comparison to their other stuff

i figured you disliked all floyd tho.

i really do love them all, and perhaps other albums reach higher peaks, but are also not as consistent. something about their expression on it, where they were as a band at the time, after the massive success of dsotm, is appealing to me. as a whole record, from start to finish, i think it holds up as their best piece: the theme of absence, the nameless black vinyl cover over the lp, the lyrics, gilmour and wright's parts and solos, the note selection. syd barrett. that burning man cover. the way it sounds like a physical journey in between songs. floyd records always meander between songs, but here it evokes an emotional response from me just as much as the songs do.

it's unfortunate that it's produced like shit though, and doesn't sound like the band at its best, but eh.

Love how the one person criticizing other people's lists has yet to even post a list.

Yeah, I felt like I could only put one album by any given artist on my list, or else it would pretty much be "all of SP's albums before the reunion, and Radiohead's albums."

honestly just google "50 greatest post punk bands" then google "50 greatest Krautrock bands"

then shuffle them up and take 10 out of a hat

you now have a "elph's favorite albums" generator

stick MCIS on there somewhere maybe

yeah i kinda wanted to say i'm more of a discography kinda guy. i just thoroughly listen to a lot of records by the artists i love. not necessarily a huge number of artists. i'm more about shuffle these days tbh

I dont know much about post punk but as long as it's not as insulting as post grunge I'll check it out

I feel like "grunge" is the only genre for which adding the prefix "post-" actually means the opposite of "like the regular version, but more artsy and unconventional."

It's a certain crunchy guitar and raspy vocal sound IMO

ain't no grunge sound really. I know everyone knows this but grunge is a made up term to sell flannel and boots. Nirvana, PJ, Soundgarden, AIC, and other Seattle bands do have certain commonalities. There was a certain insularity to "the scene"... a lot of these dudes hung out together for one, but there is also the severe preoccupation with depression and darkness, loud abrasive guitars, rock that was about the songwriting first and not instrumental wankery. But how much can you really say that Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains are similar? One is like the descendant of Neil Young and the other is the descendant of Black Sabbath

I don't hear much metal in Nirvana other than Kurt Cobain loved precursors like Zeppelin and Sabbath and Hendrix. It sounds more to me like 50% Melvins, 25% Beatles and Boston and other pop groups from the 60s and 70s, and 25% old delta style blues

alternative is a much larger umbrella though. I don't think most people think there is an "alternative sound," because R.E.M. was an early alternative band, and on the other end you had like Sonic Youth. But grunge is often used to describe a supposed certain sound that I don't really hear.

but yeah both labels were essentially trying to pin something down so it could be marketed I suppose

I mean I see that from a certain perspective but it feels about the same as saying "it's all blues to me"

like... yeah I guess technically that is where this all came from

but as I've previously said, the only thing about thinking about genres that really interests me is the historicity and the progression of sounds through different artists and different scenes.

it's just that punk actually means what "alternative" is kind of supposed to mean and alternative is a dumb term

the problem is thinking punk is a specific sound really, as if all punk bands sound like Ramones
