Default I think Elph is right

The Fall just might be the greatest rock and roll band in existence.

I mean Rock is this thing where you take all the traditional genres and put them in a blender and play them with a reckless attitude and I can't think of anyone who does that better than MarkESmith

I've finally been checking out their later works (past 1980) and I'm stunned

Like MarkESmith is a working man and music is just his job and he treats it that way.

So you got at least 2 albums worth of material every year for about 20 straight years

I've said it before, but getting fat and old and dying of a prescription overdose on the toilet is just about the most rock and roll thing I can think of

It's because The Fall never made it big (MarkESmith says this is entirely by design) and they could never break up because it has one member and a bunch of hired hands at all times

Marky writes in his book that there was an exact moment early in his career where he chose to always be an outsider

He could have written an album full of chart toppers he has an amazing ear for hooks but he chose to go the other way

Yeah he also says he can sing on key but chooses not to no joke

Remember that thing you said about watching a Rock show is watching someone utterly convinced of themselves

Grotesque is Amphetamines, restlessness, paranoia, and lots of shit talking the UK all of it in a way that is abstract, scattered, insane and yet incredibly literate almost articulate

Dragnet has the most horror literature influence both in lyrics and sound, its very Lovecraft mixed with his belief in psychic stuff and tarot cards

Along with his usual indictment of the world around him particularly the music industry

the first few albums are punk rock so if you really want the focus to be on the melody you want the second half of The Fall

Or if that's still bullshit to you, you might have to go even further to

That one has me holding my brush up to my face pretending to be a singer
"this the greatest time of my life, these are the biggest times of my life"

1. It wouldn't be if it was intentional

2. I think it is because it's the opposite of your boring party rockers who are just pop stars

That sounds a little like a false dichotomy invented to maintain a previously-held belief in the face of contradiction, to me.

So many better post punk bands from that era: Echo and the Bunnymen, The Chameleons, Talking Heads, even Comsat Angels were better than those guys.

Of course you guys would pick the most obscure experimental inaccessible post punk band from that period because most of you are hipsters.
