I have the distinct misfortune of knowing exactly what queenoftheswine was referring to. Whether she's using a plunger, an AeroPress or an espresso machine; she's having a long black.

Everything else has been in response only to the confused gnashing.

ok just for clarification, a long black is some kind of term we don't use in the US but it sounds like it's an americano? as in a watered down espresso?

I brought some of these in Hanoi (they were under $1 each) which is apparently how you make Vietnamese coffee. Just need to give it a go.

The coffee packets in hotels are worse than even pumpkin spice lattes.

a lot of instant/low quality coffee is undrinkable to me

I don't mean to be pretentious about something stupid like coffee, but I rely on it to jump start myself when I wake up, and if it tastes like grainy sludge or stringent engine oil, it's really hard for me to drink it. It's like the first important sensory experience of the day is tarnished.

during college I had this awful little drip brewer thing which I think was a door prize at some PTA event my mom was involved with once upon a time. It didn't really matter if you put shitty coffee or good coffee into it, because what came out was just the most awful terrible shit. It would make coffee so hot I couldn't even sip it until after my first class. The taste itself didn't even compare to the stale, burnt smell, which would fill my whole room each morning. Eventually the high temperature it heated water to ostensibly melted some plastic parts inside and it stopped working. Thank God, because I still gag remembering that smell.

I took up drinking copious amounts of tea and it took me awhile to get over the trauma and come back to coffee.

i most definitely hate instant coffee, but i use a Mr. Coffee, which everyone knows is a basic drip-brewing machine. i have to have flavored coffee blends, which should probably get me kicked out of this thread. at least i don't drink decaf!!

Coffee was rough in Israel as well. My peeps and I were living the simple life and Nescafe was all we had access to... at least Nescafe is drinkable. Also if you order a cold/ice coffee in Israel, you get a coffee milkshake.

I saw a lot of cafes in West Jerusalem, but I didn't go to any because I am a creep and a weirdo (also I was saving all my cash money for weed).

So yeah, I drank instant Nescafe as well.

Yes. Some places will make a distinction and serve the americano with a little more added water, though. It's kind of silly because you always get a little jug of hot water on the side when you order a long black, so yeah. I don't know.

I wouldn't have thought they would have a rugby stadium in Chicago.

Also, I'm sure that sentence is incorrect.

You would have been getting the same product, regardless.

i'm not very demanding when it comes to coffee
just shouldn't be too weak
not used to coffee shops and however they call all their coffees
first time in a coffee chain (starbucks, i think), i ordered a cappuccino in a panic, because it was the only name i recognised

always used to have this:
http://coffeemaker.pietermouton.be/c...rkoffiezet.png
just put some ground coffee in a coffee filter, put it in the machine, pour water in it, switch it on nomsayin'
black or with a bit of milk

machines with the pads and the pods and the capsules and the whatever have now also entered my life
not my choice, i was happy with the old fashioned coffee maker

Instant coffee is fine. I don't want to drink it every day, but it's fine if that's all there is. I'd rather have instant than nothing.

I always wonder to myself what kind of assholes get all snobby about coffee, when I visit someone whose grocery budget is limited and they offer me a coffee and then apologise that it's instant. Fuck that. I honestly don't mind instant at all.

I mean, I know which assholes get all snobby about coffee...they're people who are thrilled to be able to offer me a pod coffee from their nespresso machine and act like they feel sorry for me, for not having one. Pod coffee is also fine, but I don't think it's any better than instant. Don't go getting all self-congratulatory, Pod Coffee Patty
