i listened to oceania for the first time in a while because of this thread

it's really not very good... violet rays and pale horse are pretty cool. panopticon and celestials are alright. pinwheels is terrible and at first but then turns good. that's about it. he destroyed my love is winter which is a shame - some live versions were good, if i remember correctly.

still destroys monuments to an elegy.

Yeah, I've never really understood why Oceania garnered such love from a lot of fans. It really isn't a very good musical effort and the songwriting is sorta bland.

I honestly think the positive reaction was partly because it followed Teargarden which was so terrible... So in comparison it seemed like a breath of fresh air. I remember at the time really trying to like Oceania and listening to it a lot on my Ipod, but it just never clicked.

his vocals have their moments on Oceania at least and are mixed decent to my ears

they sound almost good on Violet Rays

Oceania has the worst guitar tones of any SP album. MTaE has some great toanz on the other hand.

songwriting on MTaE is just non-existent just like with Solara every track is half baked, there's no song in the song

One and All let me just take a MCIS riff and repeat it ok that's good enough I guess what's next

Oceania is extremely well produced, though the drums seem tinny. The engineering is really good. I think it's a really strong mature record. Far better then Monuments, which isn't that great.
Zeitgeist could have been very good...but we all know why it wasn't. Horrid mixing and Billy background choirs. Leaving off great tunes.

Oceania = one big yawn

You hear the first song and think "Oh, maybe this will be a good album!"

...

NOPE!

The drums sound horrible. I honestly believe they're digital or heavily editied/modified live drums cut and pasted together. The whole album sounds sterile. Zeitgeist was the last album where Billy had some edge to his writing and guitar playing. Sadly the vocal mix sucks. Guitars sound better on Monuments than Oceania, but once again crap sounding drums even with Tommy Lee on the kit. The songwriting itself on Monuments is a huge drop off.

I really hope with Billy scrapping the EP idea and going for an album means he might go back to the tracks already recorded and do some more work on them. Get someone in to help mix and record new parts, like those solos on Solara live. I hope Billy puts more time and energetic into this new album than just quickly banging something out.

Quasar is the worst song on the album though

I’m with you on this. I can still listen to Oceania all the way through and enjoy most of it, especially Quasar, Panopticon, Chimera and Inkless. I rarely listen to Zeitgeist anymore and if I do, it’s only a song or two. And Tiberius is the only song on MTAE that I really dig. I tend to just ignore TBK.

Oceania is the only album I’ve ever heard where the drumming makes me avoid listening to jt

seems like he's reality-focused for the first time in a while. although i wouldn't mind some zeitgeist songs myself... ok just starz, death from above, pomp and circumstances, zeitgeist, and stellar.

but if he wants to pretend the last 18 years don't exist it's a good trade-off

Stellar would be an awesome opener.

Am I the only one who thinks monuments is easily the best of the new stuff

I can’t imagine ever listening to zeitgeist or Oceania or tbk ever again.

That’s The Way is his best post-2000 pumpkins song though. Stellar is also good.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind hearing Stellar or Starz live. As for That's the Way... I think I wouldn't mind that song if the lyrics (mostly the chorus) didn't suck so hard. Seriously, it's like he wasn't even trying.

People over-hate on Monuments to a stupid degree. I don't think it's the best of the post-2000 stuff but it certainly ain't the shitshow people pretend it is

a few months ago I might have said it was the best post-SP2 album to date but honestly I feel like the clear winner is Zeitgeist - at least if you factor in the best recorded songs of the era a.k.a. the ones cut from the standard album tracklisting

Yeah man, I think it's some of the best material of the reformation myself. I really don't understand how it's so universally disliked. I mean, it's not great and the bar was set super low, but I think it's clearly an upgrade from Teargarden and Oceania... I still think Zeitgeist is better, but Zeitgeist does have far lower lows.

I'm not so sure abt that prt
For as enjoyable as I find some of the highlights on Monuments (Tiberius, title track, Anus!,) the lows are damn low

Really? I think it's one of the more charming and enduring songs lyrically on the album. It was one of the few songs on the album that really had the vintage Pumpkins fee.

Well, for me personally, I've just erased from my memory that Run2Me is on the album. Aside from that, I don't think there's any songs as cringe-worthy as God and Country and Never Lost or the terrible mixing of songs like Doomsday Clock and 7 Shades of Black.

I don't think it's terrible just pushed pretty hard but I mean JC's drums are still punchy enough for a good sonic kick in the balls so I can't hate on it

As for For God & Country, that's one of the songs like Appels + Oranjes where I feel like I'm one of like 5 people who actually really like it and can't understand why that's the case
