IMO, studio releases are better than live recordings because to me they just seem to capture more of the essence of that time, you know? So, I am going to say that these are Smashing Pumpkins essentials:

Lull
Gish
Siamese Dream
Pisces Iscariot
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
The Aeroplane Flies High
Adore

There's an error in your logic. You're still missing plenty of studio releases.

No, there's no error. This is MY list of the Smashing Pumpkins studio albums that I think are essential to one's Smashing Pumpkins collection.

While I liked Machina, I just don't think that it's necessary to have in the collection.

I think you can get "The Pumpkins Experience" with:
-----------------------
Gish
Lull
Siamese Dream
Pisces Iscariot
Mellon Collie
TAFH Boxset
Adore
Machina I
Machina II
Viewphoria DVD/Earphoria CD
Greatist Hits DVD
-------------------------

Of course there are a ton more goodies that I personally couldn't do without, but this Is what I think the average person would need to get a complete picture

I think MACHINA is essential, so we'll have to agree to disagree, or you can be wrong. But MACHINA was not what I was talking about.

There is more than a little "studio" material that is available, but not on an album.

Yes, while this is true, the ones I chose are the ones that I like. I wouldn't go so far as to say that I'm wrong, though.
