Default Failure - The Heart Is A Monster

First album in 18 years streaming over here:

http://www.stereogum.com/1811275/str...-monster/mp3s/

Only a couple songs in but Troy Van Leuwen's tenure in QOTSA has definitely rubbed off on his playing. Pretty different but i'm feeling it so far.

Mulholland Drive is an early standout. I'm stoked by this. None of the ear bleeding volume of 'Let It Drip' but they've done a great job of recapturing that angular, dreamy weirdo thing they do so well.

obsessed over here. I MUST see them in August, too. With HUM. It's not too expensive, the gas to NC is probably more than the ticket. I better have enough $

Love Hot Traveler, not sure about Muholland Drive. Love almost everything by Ken Andrews though, so I'm sure this will have a place right next to FP for me. 4 more days!!

the guitarist i learned most from was heavily influenced by Ken Andrews...i picked up all those dissonant chords he uses in drop D. I like the fact its a small niche of muso's who really use those chords much. Most guitarist haven't been exposed.

I feel like Ken Andrews was actually a really influential player in a very understated way. Failure definitely had a big imprint on some of the more popular alternative bands of the decade after they broke up, for better or worse.

I've never been able to get into this band. I always hear them mentioned alongside Hum and really wanna get tix to the NYC show. What album should I start with?

that's well put. my friend is Paul, he was in Analogue at Act IV back in the day. His conscious influences were the Pumpkins, Tool and Failure. But through the back door I would hear shades of Alex Lifeson and Randy Rhodes, but he was never into those bands (Rush and Ozzy).

so yea, Andrew's influence if not direct, is in that backdraft somewhere on a lot of the alt scene.

I felt the epicness of this album by song 4. there should be a rule to bands waiting 19 years between epics to then actually make one. touring at least a year before you hit the studio should be the other requirement.

they've been playing shows again since last year, and pushing this album for months now actually. you'll like it, it sounds exactly like it should. noticing a lot more background vocals than the previous albums, though

i mean i want them to be more successful...maybe interviews just aren't their thing. i don't like making fun of them because i adore their music but my god what a disconnect. i must be thinking on a different level than him lol and i thought i was fried

everyone should listen though, they're both fantastic musicians

yeah those are both my favorites off the new one, I also like Come Crashing, Hot Traveler, and of course Petting the Carpet. I Can See Houses is good too, I swear they have the best album closers three albums in a row now. Did you get to see them live? I saw them with Hum in Asheville and Kellii handed me a drum stick!

It's a very difficult thing to pull off, but Ken Andrews does slow plodding music extremely well.
