Yes, I called the Phillies winning the NLCS and losing in 6 games because I am a Yankees fan, good call.

Enjoy your tears

well this makes up for you getting every prediction wrong a couple years back. actually probably not, those predictions will probably stand out over anything else you predict.

the yanks looked really good all POs, this sort of felt inevitable. bummer pedro had to lose like that to end this series.

if i was a phillies fan id be pissed at hamels and howard over anyone else

Everyone bitches about a salary cap, but do they bitch about the luxury tax? When teams spend over the cap amount, they pay almost double from that point on due to the luxury tax. Then you have teams like Florida and San Diego that decide that rather than put that free money into salaries to pocket the cash.

IMO that's a much bigger issue than any need for a salary cap.

I don't have a problem with the trade- it's a good move for the team. I just liked Gomez and was hoping to see him develop some more.

I agree. I hate the luxury tax, it's a fucking joke. It has to be done away with and a hard salary cap be in it's place.

No there should be a minimum salary cap so the Pirates owner can't pocket other teams' money.

What MLB needs to do is figure out how to create a better revenue sharing system before they even think of implementing a hard salary cap. Because currently, most owners are just pocketing the money they get from the Yankees' revenue tax instead of putting it back into the team.

Owners of teams like the Pirates ruin baseball far more than owners of teams like the Yankees.

If you REALLY think that a hard salary cap will somehow "fix" the sport (I would argue what's there to fix anyway? Just look at the different number of teams making the postseason in the past decade and the different WS champs), you're simply pointing the blame in the wrong direction just because the yankees actually won it all this year.

It's amazing to me that the only time we hear this conversation is when the Yankees win the World Series.. and no stories about how the Rays and Rockies made it two years in a row.

Shouldn't the topic be more about teams making the playoffs and not just going/winning the world series. The riches teams for the most part, consistently make the playoffs.

New York Yankees $201,449,189-------playoff
New York Mets $149,373,987
Chicago Cubs $134,809,000
Boston Red Sox $121,745,999--------playoff
Detroit Tigers $115,085,145-------missed by one game
Los Angeles Angels $113,709,000-----playoff
Philadelphia Pillies $113,004,046------playoff
Houston Astros $102,996,414
Los Angeles Dodgers $100,414,592--------playoff
Seattle Mariners $98,904,166
Atlanta Braves $96,726,166
Chicago White Sox $96,068,500
San Francisco Giants $82,616,450
Cleveland Indians $81,579,166
Toronto Blue Jays $80,538,300
Milwaukee Brewers $80,182,502
St. Louis Cardinals $77,605,109---------playoff
Colorado Rockies $75,201,000--------playoff
Cincinnati Reds $73,558,500
Arizona Diamondbacks $73,516,666
Kansas City Royals $70,519,333
Texas Rangers $68,178,798
Baltimore Orioles $67,101,666
Minnesota Twins $65,299,266----- playoff
Tampa Bay Rays $63,313,034
Oakland Athletics $62,310,000
Washington Nationals $60,328,000
Pittsburgh Pirates $48,693,000
San Diego Padres $43,734,200
Florida Marlins $36,834,000

Of the 8 playoff spots, 5 went to teams in the top 10 in payroll.

In 2008, 6 of the 8 spots went to teams in the top ten in payroll.

N.Y. Yankees $222,519,480
Boston 147,075,645-------playoff
New York Mets 144,693,962
Detroit 136,198,404
Chicago Cubs 130,508,691----playoff
Los Angeles Angels 128,142,467-----playoff
Los Angeles Dodgers 125,864,496----playoff
Seattle 120,456,113
Chicago White Sox 113,641,026--------playoff
Philadelphia 112,654,711--------playoff
St. Louis 109,989,046
Houston 100,189,948
Toronto 98,343,520
Atlanta 92,494,314
Milwaukee 90,324,347------playoff
Cincinnati 82,886,440
San Francisco 82,074,873
Arizona 80,998,526
Baltimore 78,888,250
Cleveland 78,663,582
Texas 78,640,138
Colorado 74,791,621
San Diego 71,212,182
Kansas City 69,297,547
Minnesota 65,096,667
Washington 59,699,668
Oakland 55,223,294
Tampa Bay 51,020,720-------playoff
Pittsburgh 50,764,410
Florida 27,003,450

Now having a top payroll doesn't mean you're a shoe in for a playoff birth. You've got to have some fucking brains in order to judge talent (see Mets as an example). I can go back many more years and do this and the same teams are going to be popping up with an occasional Twins, giants, rockies, marlins team. This is not some anti-yankee shit either. I don't care if they win 18 more titles in my life span, big deal, they already have 27. They do however enjoy a huge advantage, as do many other clubs, and teams like the royals and so forth stand no chance to even smell the post season unless they are savvy and draft every future hof caliber ballplayer. I just believe if it's implemented correctly, it should be good for baseball. Somethings just not right when the price difference between the top and bottom team is $150 million dollars.

Once again, this is not some anti yankee shit. Yankee fans need to chill. The luxury tax is basically useless. Everyone here knows it.

Can anyone tell me how much the yankees pay and how much each team gets anyway?

On a side note, anyone want to guess who lands Halladay? I think he's traded before the season starts.

In your example, 5 of the 8 playoff teams are in the top half of salaries while 3 of the 8 are in the lower half. That's not really that much of a disparity.

Also keep in mind that those are end-of-year figures - any team that is playing well will usually add payroll during a season and a team that is losing will attempt to dump contracts. If you start with 30 teams with identical payrolls, chances are by the end of the season those who make the moves to increase their payroll because they're looking to the post-season will make the playoffs.
