in my mother's family parents are referred to as "Ma" and "Pa". That's how my mother referred to her parents and most of my 50+ cousins do the same with their parents. So we have always called my mother "Ma" and my father "Pa," although he never really liked that.

If I'm speaking to them directly, I call them mãe and pai (literally mother and father, just not as formal).
If I'm speaking about one of them to the other (or to my brother), I refer to them as mamãe and papai (mom and dad). If I'm speaking about them to any other person, I refer to them as minha mãe and meu pai (my mother or my father). |

directly: mommy and dad (he is my step-dad, but i was adopted this year). i call my biological father by his first name.
when talking to others about them: "my mother" and "my dad". and "my father" when talking about my biological father. unless i am talking to family, i will use his first name. although when i am speaking about the past i sometimes say "my dad" when talking about my biological father because i guess little me is remembering and i wasn't calling my step-dad dad when i was so young. that didn't happen until i turned 17 and he married my mom when i was 9. |
