I guess blomkamp is set on doing just sci fi. Elysium was meh. This could go either way. It looks like it might get a little sappy.

Yeah I haven't enjoyed any of his films particularly. Could be something to do with how the south african accent makes me want to grind all my teeth out with a metal file though.

Right. what i was gonna say last night and forgot is that i think it's a little lame though how he has those super obvious themes or subtext in his films like its supposed to make them so much deeper. Like District 9 was about racism and apartheid and Elysium is about classism. But really they were just action sci fi. But like no! there's a layer underneath, yeah that layer is paper thin.

Elysium was so badly trying to be smart and accomplished the exact opposite in the process. Not trying to start a debate on classism but that movie is ridiculous.

I agree. That's actually not what my issue with the film was. It's what the film does to address the issue. The movie sets up a dystopian future where there are 2 classes; the mega rich and the mega poor. The mega rich on Elysium are shown to be enjoying their peace and harmony that they built on the shoulders of the poor below. The poor below are ALL portrayed as savages; essentially they've regressed to modern age cavemen.

Rather than making a thoughtful and complex movie about how to address the issue of this social and economic divide, Blomkamp chose to make a movie about a dying man and his quest for a cure on Elysium and as a side quest, lets open the flood gates for everyone to claim Elysium. My problem is the unshown ending. Yes its wonderful that everyone got cures from Elysium above but now that the defenses are down, and everyone on Earth is now a citizen of Elysium, what happens to Elysium?

It gets destroyed. Obviously.

The people of earth are savages. That is the way they are portrayed.
Yes it was great that everyone got medical care at the end. But what happens when the medicine runs out and people are still getting sick? They will head to Elysium of course and now that the "gates are opened," every ship from earth can come to Elysium and do you think they will respect Elysium for its order and beauty or would they pillage and destroy and take everything they need?

I think there was a much better story to be told about how to correct such a huge divide in class. At the very least, Damons character should have sent of the medical ships but not opened the gates and instead had someone come into power that was going to address the issue of class divide and maybe instead of bringing the chaos of earth to Elysium, (which is what he does), bring the beauty and peace of Elysium to earth...

My 2 cents.

First, i was being stupid.

Second, they weren't really modern cavemen as i remember, just desperate. The lower class turned to crime and lawlessness because they are born into a world without hope and the only way to have anything is to get it for themselves. If you give the same opportunities and privilege the rich have to the poor, they will stop needing to resort to crime. So i think your premise that they will ruin Elysium is flawed.

Also the med-bays operate on a cellular level and could "fix" anyone and everything. So there wouldn't be a lack of medecine. Also, they could probably create more so they could send some to earth instead of people needing to come to elysium.
