The state of analog preservation on a digital format.
After seeing the quality of some of the DVD's circulating...namely early shows...really makes me wonder if someone was smart enough to back up old shows onto dvd with good encoding. If you look at a video like psycho where the encoding is just horrid...i hope that someone archived it properly and this is not the only digitally archived version out there. I'm not saying "gimme gimme gimme"...just trying to bring this to anyone's attention that does have a decent quality VHS gen of ANY analog show whatnot and the means to transfer it into the digital domain, do so. With the low prices of dual layer dvd-r's, there's no excuse to not have the best encoding quality.
List any shows you'd like to see brought into the digital domain that haven't already...or any upgrades that you have properly preserved. Last edited by ChoobieWoobie : 04-23-2006 at 01:21 PM. |

yeah almost all of the dvds i've seen lately are unknown gen > standalone tranfers. i don't have anything in my collection above 3rd gen and even those ones should be upgraded. i hope that people aren't downloading these versions assuming that they are definative copies. there are so many 1st and 2nd generation videos out there, and so many alternate audio sources!... i'm assuming alot of people who have these videos don't really give a shit though, i know i don't really care like i used to...

word. I'd like to see less standalone transfers around.
On a side note, anyone got any old audio tapes sitting around? |

here, here!
i hear you on the Psycho tape...
i got a copy and i agree, it's REALLY bad. i let the d00d know, and he claimed he did the encoding/capture straight from the VHS, but lowered the quality so it would fit onto 1 dvd. i'm thinkin it's worth the 2 dvd to do it right... personally, i'd love to see some more of those early shows...91-94. but, that's me. |

One issue with Psycho, at least on the tape I have experience with, is that it was recorded really weird and doesn't play properly on any VCRs. This makes it really hard to transfer before the encoding process even begins.
It would be sweet if Asselin shared his transfer, and also 666. |
