I enjoyed the first couple of listens from last week and then didn't listen to it again over the weekend.

I agree that the first 5-6 songs are pretty decent but I find it impossible to try to get through all 17 songs.

Some percussion at some point would have been nice.

Without actually going back through the old catalogue like the Djali Zwan stuff and the SP 2.0 residency stuff, I don't think these songs are that much than what he was doing back then.

I think the Djali Zwan stuff was generally stronger, but even then I remember some people losing their minds over how good they thought it was.

The residency stuff, I like of something like "99 Floors" and it's meh, just like this album.

American Gothic isn't on Spotify but I just put on "The Rose March" on YouTube but it's the same vocal style, same guitar strumming. *ant you see me, can't you see me at all.

Overall I do like Cotillions better than Ogilala, I could never get into that album at all.

It’s hard to take sad Bill seriously when we know he’s a wrasslin’-loving Tea & Trumper who is putting on an act. His persona is unlikeable. Plenty of other artists fake emotion, it’s part of the job, but they don’t sell their entire act on it, or sing this shitty or tie themselves in knots trying to outplay a market that left them behind 20 years ago.

His vocals on this album are possibly the worst they’ve ever been. And it’s an entirely stylistic choice.

Ogilala was much better.

Fragile, the Spark and Cotlillions are highlights, but the vocals on the latter are ridiculously high in the mix. Totally stupid. The guy stopped learning or accepting feedback post-2003.

Also am I crazy or could Cotillions the track use some moody synth arpeggio shit in the background.*

*Apologies for the technical jargon, I am a professor of music.

Any suggestions? I love this one, reminds me of Jersey Shore

Neptulius

Sail, sailor
Sail by june
'Round the Equator
Shadowing room
Set a course for home
Whistle along
I'll whistle along
And filth night
Stardust
Calls from the ___ home
Neptune's tune
Almighty power
They called it hairless flock
Who like ___ free to the sound
Sail, oh sail on
Sail, oh sail on

Will wailers
Will such loss?
So much sick
To ____
Cool rooms and locks
Silver, a spoon
A tarnished heart, a tarnished youth
Oh, whistle me now
By stardust
Once (?)
Neptune's tune
Once mighty power they've run
Hairless flock
Who like ___ free to the sound
Sail, oh sail on

Sail, sailor
Sail
Sail, sailor
Sail, oh sail on
Sail, sailor
Sail
Sail, sailor
Sail, oh sail on
Set a course for home
Set a course for home

American Gothic is actually a favorite release of mine. The vocal shit is still dumb but the music is good to my ears.

Glad we’re all in total, 100% agreement that any promise this album had was completely ruined by the vocal mix and lack of melody. It’s rare Netphorians see eye to eye, but it’s cool when we can all come together with the correct and same opinion.

Cheers.

So...given the reactions some people on this forum had to this record, that must mean there are people here who think TheFutureEmbrace is one of the most cutting edge albums of the 2000s and Zeitgeist is a prog-metal masterpiece.

As the days go on I find myself returning to Fragile, The Spark. I think it's one of my favourite things he's done in years. The highlights for me are:

F,TS
Cotilions
Neptulius
Hard Times

6+7 and a few others sound nice too but I need to hear them a few more times.

I find these highlights are 'higher' than the highlights on Ogilala. Though I find the latter a bit more even overall, and a bit more listenable (I didn't even get through Jubilee once - deleted off my phone - and a few others have far too much of that damn fiddle).
