The one had leaves of dark green that beneath were as shining silver, and from each of his countless flowers a dew of silver light was ever falling, and the earth beneath. was dappled with the shadows of his fluttering leaves. The other bore leaves of a young green like the new-opened beech; their edges were of glittering gold. Flowers swung upon her branches in clusters of yellow flame, formed each to a glowing horn that spilled a golden rain upon the ground; and from the blossom of that tree. there came forth warmth and a great light.

It is told that the Valar would leave their works, and the birds of Valinor their mirth, that the bells of Valmar were silent and the fountains ceased to flow, when at the mingling of the lights Melian sang in Lorien. Nightingales went always with her, and she taught them their song; and she loved the deep shadows of the great trees.

My son wrote this yesterday at his brother's basketball game

Basketball

It's orange v yellow
shouts and screams of
"Me me!" The whistle
blows, everything stops.
everything is quiet.

He just turned 9. FUTURE SHAKESPEARE, assholes!!

I gave him a spare school book to write in, at the game.

On the front he wrote

Poop Poop POOP

But no, he doesn't know I'm sharing it

Though I guess he shared it with me and I'm a sad creep so what's the difference

Our homeschool curriculum places a lot of emphasis on language arts, so we read poetry together every other day. He enjoys it far more than his brother. It's made me realise how little poetry they've read at school and at home, up until now. Such a shame

The local schools are really hard to get into - you need to sit an exam and hundreds of expat children sit the exam, maybe 20 get places in schools.

International school fees start at $25k per year, per child, for shitty schools. Top of the range schools are more like $38k per year.

Homeschooling is more like $5k/year so I thought we'd try it, because compared with international school fees it was a cheap experiment.

Both boys also said homeschooling was their first choice, here. Not sure if they still feel that way lol

We might still send them to school but the money we saved meant we could have a holiday in Australia and then two weeks in China as a family.

Curriculum, furniture & school supplies, transport to & from various homeschool co-op events and regular meet ups, plus the cost of home school activities. Tomorrow there's a pottery workshop, it's $160 for the three of us. That kind of thing. I think altogether our curriculum and accompanying materials cost $2300 SGD. The furniture for the home school room was about $1000k.

Plus we pay a bit more for an apartment with a 4th bedroom so that we can have a dedicated classroom, and more facilities - a bigger pool, a half basketball court, tennis courts, etc. So that there is room for them to go outside and play.

I think the worst thing for them is loneliness - we only see other kids a few times a week through the homeschool group. The older one is better off because he's sporty, so he has swim squad three times a week, and basketball three times a week, and has made friends through those. The younger one just writes poetry and hums to himself and is getting more and more eccentric but I think part of that is just his personality. It's just a two year stint here in Singapore and then we'll most likely return to Wellington and they'll go back to public schools.

it's only when you realize how aggressively oppressed Asian children are by their schools and extracurricular activities, that you see how privileged western youths really are

with that said, having the soul of your child smitten by a ruthless schooling system for only 25,000 dollars a year is an absolute BARGAIN

Asian kids are definitely being made to work much harder. They're much smarter and more disciplined, but they also say about themselves that they are less creative. I don't know if that's true or not.

Yeah, actually as foreigners we would have to pay $24k per year for the two of them even to attend government schools - it's about $1k/month, per child. That's a year of travel in neighbouring South East Asian countries, for our family, travelling on the SGD.

Shouldn't you be volunteering at a homeless shelter or castrating feral cats or something noble?

Not sure if I would go that far (remember that 'Asian' covers a ridiculously wide range of cultures) but I remember in Korea the poor high schoolers being in school from early in the morning until late at night. their educational system is hardcore.
