Finally watched Ghostbusters 2016. I didn't laugh more than once or twice, but my neither my childhood nor my masculinity were threatened so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

5/10

Inglourious Basterds

Been a while, but I still love it as much as I did before, and it's still my favorite Tarantino. Granted I still ain't seen Hateful 8, but until then I can still comfortably put this above Pulp Fiction & co. All the acting is incredible, the "Gorlami" scene is prob one of the funniest in all his films and Christoph Waltz is genuinely frightening and yet charming at the same time

11/10

over-indulgence & Tarantino go hand and hand though, there's no way this is moreso than Kill Bill

yeah but in Kill Bill it served a purpose. the crazy style fit the theme of revenge and violence. in basterds it just does nothing. but i must admit i liked the film when it came out. but after watching the next two i lost my zeal and basterds fell with them.

I feel like the most indulgent thing he does on IB is let the scenes breathe where most directors would have edited to hell, aside from the handful of classic Tarantino shoot-up type scenes. It's not like he's bringing over the anime sequences or whatever

Don't mind him. He listens to doom metal and fails to grasp epic fantasy. What else needs to be said?

Ghostbusters (2016) - B-
Reliably chuckle-worthy but it's persistence to nod/reference/cameo the classic films wears thin very quickly.

Finally saw The Prestige.

I liked it a lot. A lot of the same recurring themes found in Nolan's other films, such as meta-commentary on filmmaking (almost a "magic trick" in itself, as the audience, though knowing what's being presented to them isn't real, is fully willing to submit itself to the illusion).

There's also something I really like about Wally Pfister's cinematography in Nolan's movies. I don't know enough about cinematography to really articulate it. It just has this really naturalistic look, having style without being very obviously stylized.

The recurring symbolism of the birds makes one of the plot twists pretty easy to predict, but then that twist is followed by yet another twist that I didn't see coming. Turns out that the former twist was really only the "misdirection" distrqcting us from the other twist being dangled in front of our nose the entire time.

My mind is kinda boggled by the planning that must go into making a kinda non-linear narrative like The Prestige, and having all the pieces unfold and fall into place in a way that provides the tension and suspense necessary.

Like, there has to be some point in the story's development where the narrative is just linear. How do you go back into something like that and change the sequence in a way that allows for the characters to develop in a way that makes sense, the themes to unfold in a way that makes sense, and for the twists to eventually be revealed without either spoiling them, or leaving out crucial information that would make the audience feel cheated? Like, the film does more than just use the ending as a framing narrative for the entire story. It doesn't even simply reverse the narrative, like Memento does. We're weaving through different parts of time like a needle going through a bunched up ball of fabric, and it still makes sense and works perfectly for the story being told. I have no idea how I'd even go about writing a story like that.

Welcome to watching things that consist of more than action sequences and direct exposition peppered with reaction shots and dialled-in levity.

I mean, it's not like every single well-made movie uses non-linear storytelling, or that non-linear storytelling automatically makes something good.

Just the way it was done in this particular instance is pretty impressive to me, and I'm trying to imagine how I would go about designing a story that way. It just seems really daunting.

I'd take a low calibre bullet for you as far as interpersonal respect and admiration goes, but I'd still resent your love of Nolan while hopped up on morphine in recovery.

speaking of this, I re-watched True Lies with the kids, the other night.

True Lies: B-

Man, they really don't make movies like that any more. There is something strangely cathartic about watching actual shit blow up on camera. It's so gloriously ridiculous and terrible. Man I love Arnold Schwarzenegger movies.

But there was a line in there, when the sleazy car salesman fake spy says "Ass like a 10-year-old boy!" when I just about threw up in my mouth. So disgusting. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a "Look at how disgusting this guy is!" kind of comment, or a "Oh no! He went there!!" kind of comment. It ruined an otherwise pleasant evening of nostalgia.

Anybody have any good recs for books on cinematography?

I need them to go into my huge pile of unread books that I intend to read but never will.
