my roommate showed me some cool program he had on mac, and all you had to do was scan the barcode of a dvd or something in front of a webcam, and it would automatically add the item to a collection with a picture and info. might be less work, and a little cooler than a spreadsheet.

Delicious Library is the name of that. I don't get the usefulness of it... if I wanted to see a big list of my CDs/DVDs, why wouldn't I just look at my shelf?
