Default take a day, plant some trees!?

Yeah I know there have been a million posts on stupid lyrics that Mr. Corgan has sung over the years but this line (from Blank Page...which is a decent song) I have always felt was the worst.

its not really stupid at all. the lines after it make it more significant i guess.

take a day, plant some trees
may they shade you from me
may your children play beneath

it's probably in my top five pumpkins moments.

well...I personally don't mind the lyrics that lead up to that line or follow it, but c'mon..."take a day plant some trees" I think he could have come up with something a bit better. Quit trying to pretend that you are pretentious enough to accept those lyrics as genius.

You're taking that one line out of context though... you're not looking at the complete thought, which I think is one of the best things he has ever written. There's really nothing "pretentious" about it at all... your use of the word in your post makes me wonder if you even know what it means. I'm sure you could take individual lines out of almost any great historic speech and make the speaker look like an idiot.

your right I am not looking at what he is saying, I am looking at how he says it and I think that it is drab and bland and dumb...he could have use more interesting words to convey what he is trying to say in that line.

pre·ten·tious

Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified.

I hope YOU now know what it means. I don't mean to sound like an asshole but my use of that word is justified and relevant to what I was saying. But I do agree with what you stated above...but I still think he could have stressed his brain a bit more on that line, after all he has written some beautiful lines over the years and I feel that this is not one of them.

So... if I say those lyrics are genius... I am "pretending that I am unjustifiably demanding a position of distinction or merit"? Yeah, that makes a lot of fucking sense.

Those three lines are actually my favourite all-time Billy Corgan lyrics. At first I also thought they were some kind of bullshit, but when you finally realize what he's really saying, it's without doubt the most beautiful thing he's ever written. Extremely sad, but at the same time very peaceful.

And because of these three lines (especially "may they shade you from me") Blank Page is one of my all-time favourite SP songs.

Why is it that 'pretentious' seems to be the word people on this board love to use to look smart. This is the second guy in a week that has used pretentious to describe something that really wasn't.

that lyric rules, and i love the song as a whole.

the album version has awesome vocals, and the piano is very soothing. this was one of the first pumpkins songs i ever really got into, being that i began really following them moreso when they were on the verge of breaking up.

i like it live when he stretches it out "meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaayy" and rips into the 5 minute guitar solo.

the album version is better though.

ive only heard a live version of it off the sacred and profane tour, just billy. i can imagine that solo would be pretty cool, billy is a very underrated guitarist.

i think darcy's voice is pretty important to this song and so many pumpkins songs. seeing them playing and singing this together would probably have me in a trance.
