Default Billy mentioned Chicago Kid again

He just listed all of his main albums on insta and inbetween MSOTS and TFE was Chicago Kid.

Release it Bill, if you can find it!

was the idea that randomly posting them all together without any sort of comma separation or anything would trick more people into thinking anything post-Zeitgeist was "on the level" ?

also he spelled it "Kaleidoscope" here

sine etc

The more egregious oversight is the absence of Machina II seeing as Judas O really was just as much of an album as Still Becoming Apart was.

(Speaking of Judas O - by the way - all of their social media accounts on FB and IG this week were calling Judas O'Reilly - which I have lots of questions about)

But to speak to the subject at hand - I'm a deep level geek and missed the whole "Chicago Kid" era completely. Are there any songs from that era that we know of that are worth their weight? Is that an abandoned project that we are sad to see have been abandoned... or is it kinda ok?

I remember when Chicago Kid was recorded live and Billy complained about people coughing and ruining the recording -hence IN THE CAN

But maybe he's figured out how to remove coughs using AI cough removal technology.

Completely rational, it’s not like he could just book a studio and re-record it at literally any time.

I think Zeitgeist and to some extent Teargarden and Oceania were still artistic statements.

The production just sucked. Re-mix and record some parts they’d be solid stuff.

It was MTAE where the phoned in nostalgia bait began.

I'd give MTAE a pass if I thought it was just a phoned-in performance for Corgan, but his blog posts at the time as well as interview done afterwards seem to suggest he actually really put his all into the album and truly thought it would be the band's ticket back into mainstream success, which makes it even sadder. He's basically said the public's complete indifference to the album broke him and was what caused him to end "SP 2.0" and accept that his only way forward was some type of reunion. Let that sink in. Corgan truly seemed to give his all into that album, and saw this as a return to form for the band, and MTAE was the result. With Oceania, Corgan made an album that the general public was willing to accept because it actually sounded like Smashing Pumpkins: very low-grade Smashing Pumpkins, but people could still close their eyes and pretend these were riffs he could have written in the 1990s. But no, Corgan truly felt "Run2Me" and "Monuments" were what were going to get him back to the top.

Monuments still way better than the 3 that came after

and if we're being perfectly frank here, downright naked i think it's quite a bit better than Oceanlala!

MTAE was essentially a solo album and absolutely what Machinist said: pandering to an imaginary audience.

Short albums were popular, so we get 9 tracks. Writing “accessible” lyrics where “lover this, lover that”. Writing a Coldplay lead single with Being Beige (which I like), and then pulling an old riff out the back catalogue for One And All to please the old fans. Tiberius was decent but the vocal performance and mix hamper the album. Then add some synth pop tracks and close with a straight rocker. Anti-hero could be a cheezy Electric Six track.

I enjoyed MTAE after the snoozefest of Oceania but it just doesn’t hang together, it’s a weak experience. Also baffling he had D4N tracks in the can he couldn’t have dropped the best 4 on to MTAE?

Shiny and Cyr are better. Even ATUM too, probably.

Lol he called for the reunion and then just kept teargarden going as shiny, cyr, zodeon. Probably didn’t even talk to James about his years of work at stratosphere sound as a professional musicians. Just sent solara rough mix dot mp3 over to his email to learn for the jimmy fallon performance they paid for

None of us even bring up atum tracks anymore to joke around about. When was the last time you thought about “spellbinding” and its hilarious music video. This is technically an album that came out last year. It’s so over for this band unless James is able to step up in some way, but that’s never gonna happen

The band was over when Billy made a series of unfortunate decisions which predictably resulted in a poor commercial response, then blamed everyone else and isolated himself from the industry..

But it’s specifically funny that a millionaire in his late 30’s was getting butthurt over what broke teenagers on a fan board were saying about his stuff.

Love the guy, though, one of the greats and hugely entertaining. I want him to drop some juicy goodness on the Zuzu’s shop and take my money. I want a late victory from the Corgster. The local business venture stuff he does with Chloe & fam is genuinely wholesome and heartwarming.

yeah the common reaction to MTAE just proves most of you wouldn't even know a good "latter-day" SP album if it happened. CYR & ATUM are inexcusably bad, Shiny at least have a few savers but MTAE was the last time he sounded like he was having any semblance of fun despite going back to the chart-obsessiveness immediately after

Tiberius, One & All, even Monuments are the last time we ever heard this band "rock" on record

untamed drum sounds galore!

Shiny has better songs than MTAE though. Produced better too.

And Cyr is legitimately pleasurable if you’d all just open your minds to the synth shit sandwich.

I still listen to Cyr. By choice. It’s a good album. I will die on this hill.

(*not properly, actually good like SP1)
