i don't even know where it comes from to be honest...but I learned just last night that the U.S. doesn't have it - so I guess Central/South American countries might not, either?

Can't imagine Christmas without Boxing Day.

Looks it it's a British Empire thing. We get two days off at Christmas time, rather than one. Boxing Day is the day after Christmas. It's the best, nobody has to cook because you can just eat leftovers, and in the southern hemisphere you can go to the beach or to the cricket.

Singapore doesn't do it, though, because it has Chinese New Year, Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim holidays to observe, so they have to be pretty sparing with their public holiday allocation.

Boxing day sounds like my kind of day

Also having all those holidays being recognized is probably awesome, do they have celebrations for all of those?

Yep

Friday, 1 January
New Year's Day

Saturday, 28 January –
Sunday, 29 January*
Chinese New Year

Friday, 14 April
Good Friday (Christian)

Monday, 1 May
Labour Day

Wednesday, 10 May
Vesak Day (Buddhist)

Sunday, 25 June
Hari Raya Puasa (Muslim)

Wednesday, 9 August
National Day

Friday, 1 September
Hari Raya Haji (Muslim)

Wednesday, 18 October
Deepavali (Hindu)

Monday, 25 December
Christmas Day (Christian)

It's pretty funny watching the advertisements change, for like supermarkets and stuff.

Christmas is a bit of a non-event here. In the main western expat shopping district they have street decorations and stuff, and every so often you see a tree, but mostly it's just business as usual. It's sort of strange. I've been asked quite a few times here whether I celebrate Christmas.

Singapore is in many ways a city of the future.

That is truly multicultural.

I know you can't force that, but I wish more places would respect all the different holidays and traditions.

They totally force it, here. They've had one political party in power since independence.

Most locals live in government housing, apartment buildings. There are legal ratios of Tamils, Malays, Chinese and foreigners that must exist on every floor of every apartment building. So if you are Malay and see a unit for rent, but there are already enough Malays on that floor or in that building, you have to look somewhere else.

It sounds nuts, and it would just never happen in any other country, because people get all crazy about the idea of a 'nanny state'.

But the idea is that if you live next door to people who are different to you, if they are your neighbours, you will be more accepting of their differences.

The government also mandated that every child must learn their 'mother tongue' at school. So all children are instructed in English, but must also learn either Mandarin Chinese, Malay, or Tamil (other languages are slowly being brought in). So I think the idea is that children are shown that their own personal ethnic identity is important and shouldn't be lost, just because they live in a multicultural society.

A lot of people would say that it is contrived and over the top, but I think the laws in place around ethnic identity do a lot for the country. Tensions between the different racial groups would be a lot worse without the current laws.

I went to look for a bible at Kinokuniya the other day, because we don't have one here, and right next to the Christian section is the Muslim section, and there was a Muslim woman wearing a hijab standing right next to me browsing. It was the first time that situation felt totally normal to me, like it was good and fine that we had our own separate identities and could peacefully coexist in a secular retailer who wanted to make a profit selling each of us our respective faith-based literature. Like, that was all totally fine.

It was liberating, somehow. Singapore is amazing like that.

the neighbour ratio thing sounds weird, and not necessarily that good, but the approach behind is and the language studies thing is profoundly enlightened and beautiful.

i wish i was rich enough to live in Singapore or at least come work the lands of New Zealand

Yeah it rubs the wrong way for many of us, all the rules around ethnicity. But I agree, the intention is surprisingly enlightened, for a government.

oh, that was rather short. Singpore would be cool if it wasn't so uncool too, you know? I'd hate to be caught smoking pot or kissing a girl there.

Yeah there are other problems with Singapore, too. Like, no pensions, and no free healthcare.

today makes 6 weeks w/o cigs and probably something like 8-9 w/o pot. i guess physically i have weaned off them for sure but i dream about smoking both almost every night. that will fucking stop, won't it? or will i just suppress the urge until i eventually explode? the problem is i quit because i had to and not because i wanted to. i'm hoping i'll just get used to life being smoke free but the truth is i really like to smoke, either one. i'm tough, though. it's a good lesson in being unselfish and i need that.

If it's anything like getting over someone who broke your heart. It will take time and a lot of willpower. After sufficient time has passed you may find yourself occasionally daydreaming many "what if" scenarios but realize you're at a much better place without them.

If it's anything like the meal I ordered last night, it may need a little salt to tame the acidity of the tomato component. Pair it with a garlic naan and maybe throw in some onion bhajis if you've the space for them.

I've had to live without weed and cigarettes since getting pregnant 13 years ago. . Thirteen years...man that's a long time.

It sucked. I was a pack a day smoker for about six years and whenever I saw people smoking, even on screen, it spurred urges in me to smoke. It still does.

But then I started smoking again about 4 years ago, because I met a "Bad Mom" who smoked. And it was way harder to play tennis, and my mouth felt like crap, a lot. It sucked giving up that time too...but that time it was because I didn't want the side effects of playing tennis and feeling like I was drowning. So that made it easier.

I coughed up a bunch of black phlegm this morning. I think the subfreezing air brings it up.

My lungs feel fine tho. All this walking and over half a year of no cigs is doing wonders.

I smoked for a good ten years, between 14 and 24.

In a year from now, I will have not smoked weed for the same number of years that I had been alive for, when I started.

I feel like I must have grown up in the fucking ghetto or something

hate you. I smoked pot for almost 12 years and cigarettes for the same but with a 4 year break in the middle cuz my lungs were seizing up and I chose pot between the two. I'm really dumb for starting them again but meth and meth heads make you do dumb things. Technically that's longer than any relationship with a human I've been in so that makes it really hard to get over. Been addicted to the internet for about 15 years, though.

I thought you still had an occasional cigarette or does that not count fsr. It's been 6 weeks since I've even touched one. Believe me, it's not like it's some competition I just don't quite get it. I'm an all or nothing smoker though. You seem to be able to just toss 'em.

never smoking a cigarette again is something i could see myself doing through determination and active abstinence, because sometimes i still feel like puffing on one. i just don't.

but weed - the way i see it, is even if i do quit, and manage to stay off for a year or two or three - i'm still gonna come back because i just like it too much.

Yeah I'm not done with weed. this hiatus is purely for the raising of my children and grandchildren. When the grandkids are teenagers, I'm gonna hit that endo real hard and deteriorate in a classless dribbling mess before I become a financial burden and use up all of the inheritance on my healthcare costs
