Most important thing though is that when you get a dog, you need to have a lot of free time to train it. Anyone can train a dog, but it takes a lot of time and energy, and you want to be able to invest the right amount so that your pup will grow up to be smart and well-behaved. I'm not sure you would have enough time right now as a single parent. However, if you want your babby to grow up with a doggo, I strongly advocate adopting a dog which is not a total puppy and is already trained. This would be good for you, and it is also a great service for the dog because people generally want puppies only and aren't as interested in dogs who are older or have been previously owned. |

Anything but a small dog, I say.
If the brain isn't at least the size of an apricot, it'll be dumb as shit and yappy to boot. |

They're no safer, either.
I've seen a 4kg dog cause skin graft level injuries stemming entirely from an inexplicable brain explosion at dinner time. |

I'd recommend getting a cat over a dog, I grew up with 3 cats in the house and look at me today.

My parents didn't want to clean up after a dog so we had a cat.
When I wanted a dog they gave me this book and it did a good job of convincing me we were better off without one, which I think did the dogs of the world a favour |

My poor kids haven't had a dog or a cat. But they've had 8 chickens and 3 rabbits. Our Italian friend laughed at us for growing food and pretending we had pets.

that's interesting. IMO cats are way worse to clean up after and are way more destructive to their environments in general. Not that I don't love cats as well cause I grew up with both, but when cats piss on the floor or claw up upholstery, you are fucked

my mom got a dog once and it would go around and mark stuff and that was not cool, stuff is super important, let's give the dog away and get a cat
the cat clawed the furniture so my mom made the inside cat an outside cat the cat then got eaten by something |

most cats are fine if you get them some scratching posts and clean their litter boxes enough. sure there are some exceptions but most of the annoying cat behaviors are really because the owners aren't adapting the environment for their pet

i can never own a cat. my love of them was destroyed at my mother in laws house. She had between 8-15 cats at any given time and never properly cleaned up after them. Or herself. I'd hear them running in a herd at 3 am and then the inevitable breaking glass of god knows what was left on the table.
soooooooooooo happy to be out of there |
