Default Hobbit filming finally under way

In January, director Peter Jackson had surgery for a perforated ulcer.

The film will probably be done as a frame narrative with Frodo at the beginning and end. Galadriel is on the White Council, so I assume they are going to ******* the Necromancer side story in the movies.

yeah, that's exactly what i am afraid of. there's a reason why tolkien didn't ******* the necromancer story in the book. it has nothing to do with the plot, it's just a way to explain gandalf's absence.

NERD ALERT!!

Elijah Wood is the narrator. No idea why Galadriel would be in this. Gandalf's absence was due to the fact that he met with Saruman (the "White Council") to convince them to attack Dol Guldur (Sauron's, aka "The Necromancer's" hideout at the time). I wonder if that will be included in the movie; though it wasn't in The Hobbit per se, it was part of that series of events in Middle-Earth.

I'm wondering why they're making two movies. One three+ hour movie should be more than enough time to tell the story, as the book isn't all that long. Either they're going to pack in as much of the book as they can or (more likely) they're doing it for the money (two movies that legions of nerds will shell out bucks for is always better than one, from the standpoint of a studio looking to make money).

Galadriel was part of the White Council, as someone above pointed out.

The movie will be in two parts because they are sexing it up and including the attack on Dol Guldor.

this...it's perfectly feasible, that the framing story is bilbo writing his story while in rivendell and some of these characters appearing at that point in time, not in the hobbit-timeline

the maps are legit but I would expect that from LOTR fan...however, Burger King glasses really ups the ante on the fanatic factor. I can relate.

When the Hobbit was written, Tolkien didn't really plan to have it cogently connected to the Elvish mythology/Silmarillion stories. It wasn't until he sat down to write LOTR that he made the decision to incorporate them all into one fantasy universe, and in doing this he had to go back and make changes to the Hobbit, as well as placing the events in that book into the larger framework. Gandalf's motivation for recruiting Bilbo to go with the Dwarves is supposed to be that he is fearful that Sauron will bring the dragon under his control, so the peripheral story of the White Council attacking Dol Guldur is actually fairly important, especially in linking the Hobbit to LOTR.

I mean, he even considered rewriting the Hobbit in the style of LOTR at one point, so all that extra info from the appendices should be considered important. Arwen's role in the LOTR movies was fabricated, but Galadriel being present during the Hobbit story isn't that out of the blue. It's canonically accurate.

Sorry, I must disagree. She's not in the book (making her appearance anything but canonical), and the White Council's battle with Sauron is not in the book; it's not necessary to the plot, if anything, it will detract from the story's cohesion. Tolkien added that shit later (as you noted) to tied it in with the rest of his universe and the LOTR.

The Hobbit is a fantastic work and should be treated that way. There's no need to sex it up with LOTR heroes battling Sauron. The Ring connection should be more than enough to tie with the subsequent stories.

I don't think it is. Those maps are important because I think Tolkien wrote about a real place, that exists in another dimension. And because I have those maps, I'll have somewhere to go when shtf in this world. People will be begging to get in and go to the shire, but no, they'll be drowning off the coast after the big one hits.

First of all, it's not "elvish". It's called Quenya.

Secondly, lol @ wall maps being some sort of badge of hardcoreness. I have a book that has detailed maps of every story out of the hobbit, lotr and the silmarillion. it was the author's phd project. It is called The Atlas of Middle-earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad.

I was going to try and have a real discussion about this movie with you, but you are such a piece of a bullshit it isn't even worth it.

also pretty sure most of the elvish in the book (which is a word used perhaps hundreds of times in LOTR) is Sindarin, not Quenya.
