Platinum-selling saxman and long time friend of Andy's Jazz Club, Frank Catalano has assembled an amazing super group for the Chicago Jazz Festival Weekend.

Catalano joins forces with drum virtuoso Jimmy Chamberlin of Smashing Pumpkins fame, and legendary Brand X bassist, Percy Jones. Their performance at Andy's Jazz Club will feature jazz standards, powerhouse originals, as well as some Coltrane and Tupac. Several Jazz Fest performers have asked to sit in as well so this will truly be a must see show full of surprises.

Catalano, Chamberlin and Jones recorded together earlier this year with special guest guitarists Chris Poland and Bill Frisell, an album that should be out in spring 2014. They will be debuting some of their recently recorded material this weekend throughout their gigs at Andy's Jazz Club.

It feels like Jimmy has retired. I guess he's happy teaching students, playing a couple of clinics and a couple of shows in Chicago every year. As a fan it is very disappointing.

The track Sona seems to be a Catalano standard of sorts. Don't know if particularly indicative of the rest of the album or not though and hard to tell from the live videos the overall feel of the thing?

Overall feel, huh, I have no idea.

Just got an older Catalano album (Bang!), this guy is really good, so is Percy Jones. I'd buy anything with Chamberlin and those two.

Plus two fucking great guitarists: Bill Frisell AND Megadeth's Chris Poland, I mean, waah, I want that album.

to be fair jimmy is now doing exactly what he started doing in the mid 80s before he was picked up by the pumpkins. not that that's a dig, its just he's doing what he seeminly got into music to do in the first place. people forget he was the most seasoned musician out of all the pumpkins. he has sat in with tons of groups and a more jazz-influenced setting is where he seems to be happy.

tl;dr - the pumpkins are hardly jimmy's first love
