my aunt got me a subscription to RS last year for my birthday. the music news is eh but a lot of the articles are still great. i've gotten it on and off for the past 15 years or so. i actually have a stack of about 20 issues on my desk right now

we used to get reader's digest, now that you mention it. when our schools would do magazine drives reader's digest was like the magazine to push and you got extra reward for it (and i believe sports illustrated was the other one that got pushed a lot). i also got the large print for my grandmother as a present a few years ago and she really seemed to like it. she would read my rolling stones too, she really liked RS. we lived together for a while before she died

i really find those sales unethical now that i think about it
i mean you got rewarded in chocolate bars and limo rides and crappy toys
it's one thing if it's for something special for the school; it's another thing when it's relied upon for money every year and mostly benefits a private company

yeah totally agree

i find it ridiculous when a school is so unorganized that it has to rely on its students to bring home the bacon

i mean come on

whats the point of starting a school when you cant even raise money properly

and yeah the prizes were shit

one year there was a cooler that you could ride around on like a pocket rocket (mini motorcycle)

wtf would i need that for

My Nephew is in Scouts now and they spend about half the year just preaching to the kids about selling pop corn. They charge $18 for a box of pop corn and the troop gets $9, it's really disgusting training to be a capitalist consumer. You go on a scout camping trip and they drag the kids into a theater and make them watch a half hour film about selling pop corn. Oh and they don;t even hide the fact that they charge you for those prizes now. They flat out tell you if you want the kids to get prizes you have to give up 10% of your cut. They also give huge prizes to the Scout leaders whose troops sell the most so really the kids are out there trying to get 50" tv for the troop leader.

when they did the magazine drive they did this bullshit too. everyone meeting in the gym and a bunch of hype telling all of us to sell shit.
getting one kid from the audience and having him win some crap on the spot to motivate the kids to sell sell sell

he was this really annoying guy with this loud boisterous voice

we eventually got bored with him and rolled our eyes through the whole presentation

growing up i was into cracked more than mad. never subsrcibed but my mom always bought it for me for about 5-6 years. also i inherited a massive collection (@ 100 issues) of crazy, which was was the mad magazine equivalent put out by marvel comics in the 70s. it was at a garage sale on my way home from school one day in some lady's basement. the old lady made me call my mom to make sure it was okay to have them.

i only got nintendo power for a couple years. nintendo power sucked.

anyone get into wizard magazine? that was my shit right there.
