i just think they are overrated. the knee jerk reaction was due to the fact that i've argued about this with a couple of my friends for years.

they're playing with a chinese artist, Wu Man. they're doing something called "Ghost Opera" by Tan Dun...

here's what they did last time I saw them, which was basically fucking amazing:

set one
spectre (john oswald)
nomatophobis (J.G. Thirlwell)
selections from "the dead man" (john zorn)
armenia (einstürzende neubauten, arr. paola prestini & kronos)
alap from "raga mishra bhairavi" (ram narayan, arr. kronos)
potassium (michael gordon)
requiem for a dream suite (clint mansell)

set two
shuffle 25/bloodstone (remix 1) (kronos quartet/amon tobin)
oh mother, the handsome man tortures me (unknown, arr. kronos)
lullaby (trad. arr. jacob garchik)
...hold me, neighbor, in this storm... (aleksandra vrebalov)

e
night of the vampire (joe meek)
flugufrelsarinn (sigur ros)

Interesting. Yeah, they have a pretty wide repertoire. Didn't Tan Dun do the soundtrack for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon?

Anyway, I have a friend who was lucky enough to see them when they did a whole bunch of Terry Riley pieces. That program does look good though, if perhaps a bit unfocussed.

I see from reading the program that they've actually done some riley with wu man before, so maybe they'll pull something out in the encore or something...

and yeah, that was one of the more random bizzare shows I've seen in a long time. complete with them cutting up sheet metal during the neubauten song and breakbeats on the amon tobin

That does sound strange. How was the Alap from that raga? Western takes on Indian classical music is pretty rare.

Have you heard their early music album? If not, it is worth listening to. It is more sedate but pretty cerebral. It is more formal of course, but I think that is when they are at their most interesting to be honest.

honestly, it didn't sound much different than normal indian music. they had one guy doing an indian-style violin (viola?), and then everyone else just played backgrounds. obviously no tablas or anything, but pretty faithful otherwise

A Place to Bury Strangers was OK. Not as good as the first time I saw them, but it was OK.

I bought a custom APtBS $2 pillbox with earplugs, though. Pretty sweet.

festivals this summer:

Lo-Fi Fest (Nas, DJ Q-Bert, Chali 2na w/live band, Noisia, I think Kid Koala got added but i could be wrong)
Laneway Festival (Daniel Johnston, Echo & The Bunnymen)
Soundwave Festival (Faith No More, Jane's Addiction, Meshuggah, ISIS, Baroness, Clutch)

Fuck the Big Day Out. fuck that thing it's arsehole. Muse? Mars Volta? Who Cares.

Hopefully a Mastodon side-show too though. Converge and Sunn O))) are both unnanounced but sources tell me they're coming in February and December respectively.
