I'd peg "Tarantula" as a very good song, and certainly the best song of the revived Smashing Pumpkins. I suppose the last "great" SP song would be "Stand Inside Your Love" or "I of the Mourning."

I’ll admit I only listened to post Adore stuff once for the most part but the last time I think Corgan was still writing legit stuff was with the Machina stuff. The last truly GREAT stuff he wrote may have been on Adore.

Make It Happen - Backwards Clock Society was the last good song.

Seriously...I would have preferred Billy continue as a psychedelic 3-piece band.

I always forget about them, but yeah, the whole vibe of that band was on point. He seemed earnest and like he just cared about making nice music with people

Really great band name too. It's just like SP - kinda dumb yet memorable

I've never understood this narrative and I've heard it a lot. It's one of the few songs on Z where the vocal production works and it's one of the few songs post reunion where he actually rips it on the guitar in his signature emotional style.

It's definitely a somber tune, but it really works as far as I'm concerned. It sounded odd initially, but it's really a song that takes time to sink in.

I'm not understanding all of the SIYL love. Sorta always struck me as a 1979ish kind of knock-off. Very straight forward type of song.

If one had to pick the greatest song off of Machina, It'd have to be TEG. I know it might not be a popular pick because it was a lead single and all, but really, that song kicks ass. Jimmy slays on it.

Define "great". There's "good", which would be the likes of Quasar and One and All, or even GLOW and Superchrist.

"Great" suggests there more than just the music in play; there's an era, a meaning. If that's the case then it's definitely...

...Stand Inside Your Love. It's the only song that is of the same quality of feeling, performance, and production, as any of the great tracks from pre-Machina.

Although I actually like Monuments as a whole it is true there are no great standout songs on the album that I would label as 'great'. A few very good ones but none I could call great.

Their last 'great' songs were all on Oceania. A great album in itself.

They are Panopticon, Violet Rays and Pinwheels, Pale Horse and Inkless. I would label all of them as 'great'

SP2 had plenty of good songs. Oceania was good front to back- solid enough that I'd consider it great as a whole, even though I don't know if I'd call any of the songs 'great' individually which makes it kind of a weird album. Panopticon is probably as close as it comes for me. I like Tiberius, but it's felt off since someone pointed out that it sounds like a Weezer song.

The original albums each had songs that were totally absorbing and transcendent. You'd have to go back to Machina to find the last time there was a song that could possibly be an all-time favorite, for any band. Stand Inside Your Love is the most obvious answer. I'm also a huge fan of Wound, This Time, Vanity, and Slow Dawn.

In March 2000, at the back of the promo signing line at Tower Records in Philadelphia, I met a man who was a fan of this band since their early days. He told me he thought their best album was gish. Neither of us met the band that night as we arrived too late, though our conversation enabled me to see the wisdom of someone who knew with clarity that their best album was their first album, and nothing since has bettered it.
