This isn't 20 years ago. Just get on with it. No one fucking cares about what you eat. There are apps galore, food review sites, restaurant guides and more out there. |

Really appreciate the last sentence in that post my dude, thanks for the tip
But going by your example, should we just be a big fuckin' jerk to anyone that even mildly excitedly takes an interest in something they've just discovered, or makes a commitment to something significant in their lives? |

I am basically vegetarian most days because I don't really care for meat....but giving up dairy would be impossible for me. And other products like soap. I'm a creature of convenience with little altruism left, on a grand scale, at least.

I went pseudo-vegetarian for a few years and replaced a lot of animal foods with soy and it completely fucked with my hormones. Obviously it doesn't mean that would happen to everyone, but I would not recommend. Quote:

I love Essano's shampoo and conditioner and they're vegan-friendly. You can get them for fairly cheap at Chemist Warehouse. |

I guess it depends on a person’s reasons for the new commitment

I'm not vegan, but vegetarian. I became one a year and a half ago because my diet was already leaning that way. I had previously lost all my fat weight through portion control and exercise and eventually I stopped red meat, then turkey, and I have never liked pork products; so it was a small step to just not eat meat.
I still eat eggs and cheese (because the vegan alternatives are gross to me), and I don't pay attention to what non-food products I use that may use animal products because I'm not vegetarian for animal rights reasons. I used to work at a health food store and I did try some alternative products like soap and toothpaste, but the soap left my skin feeling weird and the toothpaste I was told to stop using by my dentist. |

The most common misconception I came across was that, if you're vegan-veggie, that you automatically must be healthy and thin and that is, uh, not the case. Calories are calories, whether it's red meat or six vegan brownies.
It is fun to cook veg/veggie and go to veg/veggie places, though. All kinds of new stuff to try. |

And I generally don't tell people I'm vegetarian unless it is either pertinent to the conversation or they ask about what I'm eating.
I was seeing a dude last year who cooked a meal that had bacon in it. I just quietly picked it out and ate the rest of the food. Someone else noticed and I got real shy (no idea why) and told them. He was apologetic for forgetting but it's not a big deal. |

Don't forget to make a thread announcing that your dog/cat is a rescue. White folks love to brag about that kind of thing.

I can’t justify eating meat but I still do it. It’s a moral failing.

The hipster Silicon Valley stuff?
Working themselves into an early grave. May as well consume that shit instead of actually eating something yummy, like grain fed beef. |

I had started eating chicken and fish when I met my husband, and he didn’t care one way or another, but when I fell pregnant for the first time and began craving red meat he was pretty happy.
He comes from sheep farming families on both sides, so he grew up watching the whole process from lambing to slaughter. His eating motto is “I love all delicious animals.” No romantic notions of animal sentience or misguided anthropomorphism for him. His cousins are the those people on FB who have profile pics of them carrying dead wild pigs out of the forest. Not much to do out in the country, hunting and rugby are pretty much your only options. To his family, veganism is a ‘townie’ thing, along with overpriced coffee, salad and arts degrees. I have one kid who takes after him and is pragmatic about meat eating, and another who regularly eats meat at the dinner table and then cries actual tears about it, afterward. So I guess it’s a sort of personality thing maybe. I have always been much more sentimental. Every so often I feel guilty about eating meat but it sort of blends in with all my other guilt, now. |
