Before this gets too far away from the original point of the comment (if it hasn't already) - I brought up the German example not to talk about minimum wages themselves or income inequality, but to note that tipping need not be seen in the context of augmenting the minimum wage. I imagine that many people in the US tip because it is expected socially.

I don't think that Americans are more aware of the plight of the low-wage worker than Germans and while many would say they are tipping for a humanitarian reason (an ultimately self-serving comment which immediately confers status on the person that says it by defining a hierarchy and a client/patron relationship) while really they tip because there would be severe social shaming if they did not and got caught.

I'm feeling more dread by the minute as I sit here with my hands on the keyboard, knowing the shitfest this thread will turn into.

So I will abstain from responding directly. Good day sir.

The person tipping the server does not define the hierarchy. The employer does that by paying the server $2.13 per hour.

I tip really well pretty much always even though I'm poor. But I don't eat out much.

The whole server thing actually makes me kind of uncomfortable. I don't like it.

The employer is unquestionably at fault for the economic hierarchy.

What I am talking about is the status distinction that comes from a person making sure to let everyone know that they are lifting the under-classes out of poverty. It automatically confers the social position of a patron on the tipper and the worker as a client.

I think hierarchy has been inescapable. Perhaps it helped our ancestors survive. Whether it is still needed is another question. I don't want to say that human societies can remove hierarchy, but I do think it should be minimized and avoided wherever possible.

we text each other about three times a year. i love him so. miss him dearly. my mom liked that one time he made the outgoing message on my machine. she said it made it sound like a boy lived with me. like boys have magical bodies that block bullets and shit.

Whaaaaaaaat. Do you guys tip Cab drivers as you would a waiter? Sometimes I'm smashed and can barely afford to pay the fare to get home and won't even tip the guy at all. I figure that the long, pricey fare is satisfying enough for the guy. I normally at least give em a couple bucks though.
