I'm pretty sure the 1970s are well enough behind us, Took.

You might as well wave a broken bottle at people for all the good your greetings will do.

I've also been trying to practice more eye contact. I have a bad habit of not looking people in the eye when I'm talking to them, and instead having my eyes flitter across the room.

Also, you know that thing where you look at somebody, but then you quickly look away right when they look back because of your instinctual fear of looking like you were staring? I've recently reasoned that though we are trying to avoid looking creepy, the less creepy thing to do would actually be to hold that eye contact and meet their gaze, and then use a smile to break the tension of two strangers making eye contact.

That way, it shows that you aren't trying to hide anything, aren't secretly trying to stare at them, you're just a confident and friendly person who acknowledges other people's presence.

It's harder to do in practice than it is to type, though. It's a hard habit to break, especially because it's so automatic.

Got invited to give a talk to kids at a community center in a couple of weeks.
Already written and rewritten my notes about 15 times in the past few days.

Yes, I do the exact same thing with making contact and then looking away. Not only is it creepy but also, taking my felonious background into consideration, it makes me look like the pos criminal I am. Unfortunately, it has become instinctual now so it will take some effort to change.

But at least we are aware of this, right? That means there's some hope.

same here. for me it's a combination of insecurity, thc abuse induced paranoia, and felonious guilt.

buzzard was wrong, btw. yeah a lot of ppl ignored me (which was ok) or acted contemptuous (which sucked), but a few responded really well (which was encouraging). a young attractive female said hi to me and let me pet her dog.

Why do I need the KILO cube?
  • You are a metal junkie and need a centerpiece for your collection - pretty much the densest thing you can own in this size.
  • You are an educator and you want to shock your students with the density of Tungsten, creating a memorable experience.
  • You want to have the coolest thing in the office - the ultimate conversation starter.
  • You want the ultimate "structure" item to focus on for creative unleashing or meditation

Why Tungsten?
  • 70% denser than lead
  • Denser than Uranium
  • Nearly impossible to melt
  • 4x harder than Titanium
  • 19x denser than water

the good thing about eye contact is that it's not necessary to keep eye contact for more than a few seconds at a time. I think it is inherently uncomfortable to stare right into anyone's eyes for more than a few moments, because it's a pretty high level of intimacy. I think a comfortable conversation has a good back-and-forth balance of direct eye contact versus looking elsewhere. As long as you look engaged I think you are fine. Occasionally I will encounter a socially awkward person who will not break eye contact, and that is actually worse I think, because it triggers feelings of anxiety and entrapment, at least for me. I knew a guy in high school who, if you looked away while he was talking, would move his body and head to recenter himself directly in front of your face. Not great.

Only a few didn't ignore it or take your pleasant demeanor out back like the mangy dog it is?

i'm discovering philip k. dick (lolol)

check it:

Silence. It flashed from the woodwork and the walls; it smote him with an awful, total power, as if generated by a vast mill. It rose from the floor, up out of the tattered gray wall-to-wall carpeting. It unleashed itself from the broken and semi-broken appliances in the kitchen, the dead machines which hadn't worked in all the time Isidore had lived here. From the useless pole lamp in the living room it oozed out, meshing with the empty and wordless descent of itself from the fly-specked ceiling. It managed in fact to emerge from every object within his range of vision, as if it - the silence meant to supplant all things tangible. Hence it assailed not only his ears but his eyes; as he stood by the inert TV set he experienced the silence as visible and, in its own way, alive. Alive! He had often felt its austere approach before; when it came it burst in without subtlety, evidently unable to wait. The silence of the world could not rein back its greed. Not any longer. Not when it had virtually won.

I still find it terribly strange that I was in fact very close to his home town in Maine around the moment he stopped posting. we were going to meet up but I think he was busy or something.

i promise I didn't kill him.
